PBA oil pattern summer league - What should I expect?
« on: May 02, 2004, 07:45:46 PM »
Tomorrow I start my summer league, which is going to be an 8-week league bowled on the different PBA oil patterns. Any advise for shots to play on the PBA patterns or what I should expect as compared to a house shot. The lanes are synthetic as well just as a note. I’m pretty pumped to see how I can do.

Not all PBA patterns are TRUE sport patterns, i.e.; 2-1 ratios....HOWEVER, that doesn't mean they're not tough!

Expect to have certain conditions give you severe out of bounds....for example, if you go outside of 10, the ball WON'T come back,....of if you tug one, it's GOING TO GO BROOKLYN....

Consistency is key, ....hit your mark, keep you speed and revs consistent!

But most important ....>HAVE FUN and LEARN!!!  Don't get discouraged,...you WILL drop in average ...I think the average drop is 20 pins...........

Despite the common belief on this board, Pattern E IS NOT a cakewalk.  Remember that

I'm also pumped to see how my blade reactive reacts on the different patterns.

It should be an interesting league. It's a doubles league open to any sanctioned bowler men, women, and youth. You bowl 4 games a night, two against one team and two against another. That what the guy working the desk at the alley said anyway.

A couple of things for you:

1) If you push the ball, it will leave a washout or light pocket split 8 times out of 10.
2) If you pull the ball more than a board or 2, you will go brooklyn or put it in the beak for a nice 4-6-7-10 combination of some kind.
3) If you have too much speed, see #1.
4) If you have too little speed, see #2.
5) Be thankful that you get to experiment with the shot for a few bucks a week instead of for $250 for an 8-game tournament.
6) If you average 190 or better, consider yourself fairly skilled at this thing we call bowling.

Oh, yeah.  Don't forget to have fun.
