Question about shape of thumb
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:32:28 AM »
It was pointed out to me that one of the reasons that I squeeze the ball and have a late thumb release, is that my thumb curves upwards and slightly to the right, from the base to tip (I am a righty). This is from jamming my thumb alot when I played football. Has anybody seen or dealt with this (whether you are a coach, ball driller, have a teammate with this)? What is the best technique for geting my thumb out at the right time? My balls are drilled correctly, it seems to be a mental thing. The guy who pointed it out to me suggested at the point of release to push down with the base of my thumb, so that the thumb goes inward towrads my palm. What are your thoughts on this? This is the only thing holding me back from having a strong phyical game.

Buckwild, to say I havn't heard anything about this...just some FYI you should NOT have to squeeze the ball to hang on...I also squeeze it and I'm having a visit with my driller on friday (I can't bowl anyway thanks to the blister on my thumb caused by the squeezing and hanging of my thumb) I admit sometimes we still grip the ball even if it does fit right which may be your case but talking to an experienced person will be the key...anyway good luck.

If you mean squeezing as in the ball wants to come off your thumb early, so you HAVE to squeeze, then try out some forward pitch in the thumb.  But if you are squeezing for some other reason, then I'm not sure.

As for pointing "up", do you mean if you lay your thumb flat on a table, the nail part will be raised up in the air?  That is like my double-jointed thumbs, and I don't believe any of my problems have to do with that.

a ak57,
That EXACTLY what I meant. Its not due to being double-jointed, it had to do with my thumb being severely jammed when I was playing football.

I squeeze the ball even when I don't have to and even with a good fit, thru 30-40 years experience of squeezing it and cannot seem to break the habit.

Well, I don't believe then that will be the reason for any problems, but what i said earlier about the pitch of the thumbhole in the ball.  Take it to your driller and ask if he can let you try a ball with some forward thumb pitch.  See if that helps any.

I have the forward pitch in my thumb. Technique wise, what works to get the thumb out at the proper release point? What do you think of the pushing down with the base of the thumb to make the thumb go towards the palm? That was suggested to me.
