did you know that league secretary fees are taxable?
« on: January 27, 2005, 05:10:48 AM »
I just found this out a couple of weeks ago. The ramifications are scary...
any fees paid to league officers are taxable, and supposedly subject to withholding taxes.
And with the merger of the USBC, apparently the IRS is very interested in how this is going to be set up.
Ouch.

It's money paid for work done. Sounds like a salary or a contract. Small wonder the iRS is interested ...

Now if there were simply a barter system, like no leagues fees charged for work done to maintain the league records, (that is, no money changed hands) then that is not really taxable AFAIK.

Sure league secretary fees are taxable and why shouldn't they be?  There is one secretary in our area who earns $4896.00 a year from one league.  I think the bowlers are crazy to pay this much.  But, if they take the income, they ought to have to pay the taxes.

Maybe I am stretching things a bit here, but look at it this way. Since all league officers are voted into office by a majority of the league members, isn't he therefore an employee of the league entrusted with funds supplied to him to pay legally binding fees to an organization so that earned honors are recognized??

WOW $4896.00 paid to the Secretary! In one league! How much is bowling per week? $50.00  My girlfriend is the Secretary for our Sunday league with 22 teams and is only getting $700.00. I guess she's getting ripped! LOL

Think about how many leagues pay 50 cents to the secretary per bowler per week...then figure 50 teams per league with five bowlers to a team in a 36 week season.  Some areas have leagues that are that large.

Add into the equation that secretaries on one league often do the job in other leagues.  In a large city, it is easy to envision some pulling in five figures as a league secretary...which is a lot of unreported income that the IRS would love to get their hands on.
