Difference between Vinyl and Urethane Slugs?

As Vinyl is a bit softer I assume they realese slower than Urethane?
Am I correct?
Is there much of a difference?

Vinyl, to me, feels more like the inside of the ball itself. It has more of a texture after drilling unless you really buff the inside of it in a big way. Urethane can be buffed until it's like glass.

I've also noticed vinyl being a bit more susceptible to changes in ambient temperature.

urethane is the way to go. If you want an oval thumb, won't happen with vinyl. Urethane is much better. Also, vinyl is a bit tackier and you'll hang up in it more often.

How would ovaling be impossible with vinyl? Every ball I have has an ovaled thumb hole and I've got balls with vinyl and urethane slugs and some with no slugs...

While I agree that urethane is the way to go, you can still get the same shape hole with a vinyl slug as you can a urethane slug.  I've milled a few thousand.

Vinyl is softer and is affected by color.  The lighter colored slugs are usually smoother after drilling.  Black, purple, red, not usually very smooth.  You can wipe them down with acetone and make them smooth like a baby's butt.  I've always thought vinyl had a tacky feel to them and combine that with clammy skin and they can be trouble.

I've used urethane slugs for a long time and recommended them to my customers.  Milling urethane takes sharper bits.  They come out smoother to begin with right after drilling.  The material is harder and is not affected by color.  All the colors feel the same at least to me.  You can rough up urethane slugs to give them texture without the tackiness.  You can also put a square of scotch brite on your bevel sander and make them ssssuuuuppppeeeeerrrr slick!!

I personally like the soft feel of the VInyl slugs.  I only use the pink ones, because as Mike said, color affects the texture of the slug. I tried urethane ones and they always felt too hard and slippery to me, but it really comes down to personal preference.  My only advice is that if you find a color of Vinyl that feels good to you, stick with it for every ball.

To be honest I don't care...I'm going to put tape in it anyways and if I don't need to I will finger sand it myself to put tape in it.

I use nothing but urethane slugs.  Vinyl gets sticky in the humidity.  I hated the old vinyl inserts because they tapered at the bottom.  Urethane slugs with 1 piece of white tape in the fron just for feel.

I've got a couple of balls with clear thumb slugs at the house, but I can't find any blanks anywhere (I use Turbo ICE grips for the fingers). Are those not made anymore?

I believe that he was referring to clear slugs when he asked if they were made anymore, and to answer the question...never seen one, though if they make them, not sure why my pro shop didn't carry (everyone loved the ICE finger inserts).

Yes, "ICE" is the color code for Turbo's clear inserts.

I've got two balls in the house that have clear thumb slugs, but I don't know who made them. I would assume Turbo but I'm not sure.
