Difference in Speed 15 lb. vs. 14 lb.
« on: November 29, 2009, 10:10:48 AM »
Anybody have a comparison?  I have a 14 lb'er and although I would not say that most of the speed measurement devices on most modern scoring devices was good.

I did a comparisons of two of my 15's on the same trajectory to the 14 lb'er that I have and I picked up on average 2 mph.  From 14.5 with the 15's at the camera/back end to 16.5 with the 14.  Back end is where the measuring device is on the lanes I used.

Any agree or disagree?  Would your comparison's be the same or different 14 lb. to 15 lb.? I am wondering if this comparison is valid which it seems to be at least for me.  Like to hear others thoughts that have done this.

I would agree ion 2 mph, it also seemed liked revs increased. It totally messed my approach timing up though. Far more then 16->15. I can between the heavier weights fairly easier.

Disagree... Unless all three balls you were using had the same surface material and were prepped the same way.

They were all at P4000.  Track Heat, Visionary Ogre Pearl and Visionary Gladiator Solid.  Heat and Ogre Pearl are about same total hook Glad. Solid slightly more.

Follow up last night was able to use a test ball Mutant Cell 14 1/2 lbs. vs. a 15 lb. original Cell both P2000 on a medium-heavy lane condition.  I could keep the lighter Mutant Cell on line much better so much so that I was three boards right of the Cell.

As far as timing, if I keep my feet slow I notice no problem keeping lighter balls in time and in the swing.  I tend to be be a "feel" player with a slightly semi-muscled swing.  That will probably never change.

Scott, I found that when I dropped in weight from 15lb to 13lb balls my accuracy, rev- rate and speed all increased. I know the issue that always crop’s up is carry with lighter equipment. At 62 the 15lb balls were controlling me instead of me controlling the ball. The benefits I have received from the equipment change have totally overridden any issue I had with lighter ball weight.

I wonder if a 15lb ball traveling at 13mph really produces that much more power than a 13lb ball traveling at 16mph.   I remember when I was in my 30’s cranking a 12lb polyester ball, no thumb, and carrying the world until all the ligaments in my arm and elbow went out of whack. That’s when I decided to learn how to bowl.

My league partner for the past several years went from 16 to 14 pounds after coming back from an elbow tendonitis condition, and he definitely picked up speed going to 14. He had to work on his timing to keep from blowing past his desired breakpoint.

On a side note, he''s been frustrated since his return at 14. He was a 230 THS at 16, but he''s struggled in the 210-215 range at 14. In practice on fresh THS shots, the 14 carry has been great. The problem is in second shift league, where the shot gets chopped up and morphs into a serious wet/dry. The 14''s have a more pronounced bounce off the dry and don''t carry as well in the wet. He leaves some ugly stuff that you just don''t see as often with 15/16 pound equipment.

He''s finally feeling healthy enough to experiment with his old 16 pound stuff, so this last weekend we went out and practiced after the lanes had been bowled on for a few hours after oiling. The 16 pound equipment had a tendency to smooth the condition out more than the 14, and it reflected in his consistency and scores.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
