Will we ever have a alternate to the USBC ?
« on: December 10, 2010, 04:31:29 AM »

Will we ever get another shot at a different sanctioning body. The one we have is
currently unable to run thing properly. It has been done before, can it be done again?

The National Bowling Association was formed in 1906, when Eastern cities broke away from the American Bowling Congress.  The first NBA Tournament was held the following year at Young’s Iron Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  For awhile the NBA rivaled the ABC as bowling’s national championship.  Poor management and internal disputes led to the end of the NBA Tournament after 1916.  The NBA itself was absorbed back into the ABC in 1921.

Locally I think it could happen.  Nationally, I don't think it will happen in my lifetime.

TNBA is somewhat of an alternate currently. Although they use the USBC averages, TNBA runs it's own tournaments, and has a nationwide org structure.

I'm curious as to what makes you say that.  I've been bowling for 22 years and have never had an issue finding a league to bowl, or had any issues with tournament directors verifying my average, or had any issue with honor scores being recognized (when properly done at the local level).

It's kind of like dealing with a large bank...they are great until you have a problem.  Sure USBC can keep records, put on tournaments, keep leagues sanctioned, they are just fine, but god help you if you need a ruling on something.  They are completely inept at GOVERNING the sport.  They are 20 years behind the ball companies with technology and understanding, and refuse to address any sort of integrity issues.

The organization as a whole barely understands the sport in a modern sense...

I can say that they do nothing to make sure the centers are certified.  That's all done at the local level.  And I know of many associations that just fill in the paperwork and don't bother to actually do the center certification.  Plus that certification has gotten looser and looser.  Granted that's a local problem, but USBC never checks it out.  Also there are nearly always issues with center certification.  Gutters are too deep, too shallow, lane depressions not in spec, foul lights out etc......that's to be expected.  But each center is supposed to make their fixes and then be rechecked.   This rarely happens.  And then the assoc. can always put the center in as "Provisional", which means they are trying to make their fixes.  But in the mean while, honor awards will be awarded, leagues will be sanctioned, etc.....

Speaking of honor awards.  There's supposed to be a time limit.  But USBC never adheres to it.  NEVER  Plus if a secretary is delinquent in their awards, say for a high level scratch league, all they have to to is go over the assoc. head to USBC and their awards will be processed.  Even though they were contacted, asked for the forms, given extra time....doesn't matter.  USBC will never uphold their time limits.  Just like they didn't uphold the time limits for the local mens and womens associations to  merge.

Many changes in rules and such are pushed through without delegate vote.  Such as the up in youth dues from like $13 (what our youth paid) to $17 in one year.  Plus they made the decision to cut off the youth age from 22 to 20, no vote, no pre-notice.  The Special Achievement awards have been all over the place.  Two years ago, we were giving too many out.  So then USBC arbitrarily changed the average requirements (no delegate vote) and then last year, too few awards were handed out.  So now this year, we again have a change in average requirements....which are even looser then two years ago when "we were giving out too many awards".  Now some people like this and want the awards.  But is it really pushed by the two major software companies that provide secretary software which apparently now has to be updated and purchased each year.  Drives the secretaries crazy to have to buy the upgrade each year to keep up with the changing forms.  And what about the disaster of a form that was the Honor Award for last year?  Again that change was done without any local delegate feedback.

That's what comes to mind right off the bat.  Oh yeah, USBC determined how much local associations can charge for youth processing.  We used to get $3 per bowler, but now USBC says we can only take $2.  This was not up for vote nor explored very well.  It has cost us some budget issues.  Youth get jerseys.  Who wanted jerseys?  And are they worn....I don't see them worn.  Lots of money was spent on this Bowlopolis stuff....."bowlopolis"?  Have not heard of any youth even vaguely interested in "bowlopolis" but we the members paid for it.
