Author Topic: Disappointment in the Red Pearl Urethane Hammer (Read 3523 times)

The boss ordered one the other day because he was interested, and it looked pretty nice. It showed up yesterday, and we were both pretty disappointed. It's ugly. It looks nothing like the pictures. It's not shiny, it comes partially dull. It looks more like a Diesel Particle, but without the cool logo, and a lot uglier. Not to mention that the one we were sent by Hammer had a quarter inch pin, no joke. The pin and cg are so close they're almost touching. Of course you don't drill a ball based on appearance, but being that it's a urethane ball, and hence nothing special, not to mention the short pin won't affect the reaction much anyway, he's not going to bother drilling it now. He'll drill up something new every now and then to create interest in the ball when people see him throwing it during leagues, but generally only if the ball looks nice or has a unique reaction. For people that are interested in it because you're expecting that shiny bright ball that kind of resembles a Cherry Bomb, don't waste the money. Buy a red Hit, they're closer to the color, and probably react the same.

If memory serves correctly, the re-issued red pearl was a pancake block. The concept of pin to cg distances was not really in play with the pancakes. It is not the same as the original red pearl...

It's just a redub of the pearl claw. I think my claw looks much nicer. People often ask me what ball I'm throwing. I tell them it's a urethane pearl claw. They say oh...nevermind.

michelle's memory is correct, the ball is a 3 piece pancake weight block, not the original hammer core. pin distance does not matter it's just the spot where it sat while the shell was being poured.

Um, yeah, we kinda have a clue about pins and cgs. It's a small requirement of working in or owning a pro shop. It might not matter too much on this ball particularly, but it's still irritating. It reacts enough to have drill patterns slightly affect it. Are you actually saying that pin distances don't matter when drilling a ball? If you do, you're sadly mistaken. If not, forget I said anything.

Pin distances on a pancake block are not anywhere near the significant factor that they are on non-pancake blocks. I'm not sure that the concept of locating pin was even used by many until the early 90's.

Pancakes are the exception to the rule regarding the perceived insignificance of static weights.

Hammer's biggest mistake was even considering releasing this ball with a pancake block.

I was excited that I might have had a chance to replace my red pearl with a NIB, their loss.

IMO the sling blade should have been released with a pearl urethane instead of reactive cover.

I bought the Glow Amulet.
I'll buy the new Urethane Gargoyle.
I'll probably buy the next Pearl Urethane with a strong core that comes out.

Yeah, I know that pin placement doesn't mean much, if anything on a ball like that. mfd301 was making it sound like pin placement doesn't mean a thing on any ball.

no hamster you got it wrong, was just commenting on this particular ball. because it is a pancake weight block pin does not matter. i've been drilling since the 80's so i also know the difference of pin in, out and distance.

Lol, ok, that's kinda what I thought. I had some guy come in the other day and order a ball for his girlfriend (Target Zone), and he told me, "Hey, make sure you get one for her without one of those spinning cores, she just wants it to go straight, ok?" Makes it so easy to build a good rep with customers when you can say "Not a problem" to questions like that, lol.
