Where can I find instructions on this method? And if you use soap, does it matter what kind?

Search is your friend. Last post was only a day ago.
Standard dish washing soap, don't bother covering the holes, sand the cover down to 400-600 grit to start for best results, TURN OFF THE HEAT/DRY CYCLE, let dry for 24 hours, then refinish the cover how you want it.
