DIY ball rack 💭
« on: August 27, 2022, 04:31:32 PM »
I’ve been wanting to make my own ball rack and have been looking through old posts. I’ll probably make it out of wood instead of PVC, but I have heard wood can pull moisture out of balls causing them to crack. Is this true? I might try to get some water line insulation to put around the boards the ball rests on to combat this. Anyone have any tips for making one from your own experiences? Things you would do differently? I haven’t ruled out PVC, I’m just thinking wood would look nicer and I can stain it a dark cherry color

I have two wooded racks and some that are not wood. I haven't seen any difference in balls cracking

I've heard the same thing about wood and cracking. I bought some 2" wide foam insulation tape at Home Depot and put it on all of surfaces that the balls come in contact with.  Or use metal clothes rods for the balls to be on.

The one I have that was previously used in a bowling center has like 7 coats of house paint on it, I'd assume that is a decent barrier
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

When I built my rack I used FlexSeal to coat the wood.

Mine is bare wood with no coating.

Wood may or may not dry out a ball. I suspect it just another old bowler tale of why balls crack.

I have three 20 ball wooden racks that I built.

I rarely have balls crack on the racks. In fact, more of my balls have cracked sitting in boxes on the cement floor than on the racks!

Crack.

If this site had a +1, I would give you two. 😂

I don't know if you consider it a DYI ball rack because I did not make it but I have 2 racks that hold 8 balls each that were formally wooden CD racks. I ripped all my CDs and boxed them up for storage and now my CD racks are bowling racks. Worked out perfectly. Never had a ball crack on them yet but did have a ball that was in a bag next to the rack crack.

I bet that wood being so close caused the crack. Probably should have put it in a different room.  ;D

Your comments are all golden 😂 I won’t worry about doing anything fancy to the rack then! Thank you
