What type of condition do you actually bowl on???
« on: October 05, 2004, 11:57:24 AM »
I got to thinking, me and a_ak57 bowl on a real crap fest shot, and I was wondering what everyone else bowls on? People rag me about being a 170 average bowler, but the truth is, thats about 90% of the people that bowl in our house! Even the coaches and directors of leagues and stuff say that our house SUCKS!!! The difficulty of our house could almost be compared to the difficulty of a sport shot, just a different way of going about playing the shot. The difference is there are actually honor scores shot on sport shots, our house has about 1 800 i believe, and a handfull of 3's. I realized from doing PJBT's, that on a THS/wall I average around 220, though this could also be due to the competitiveness of the tournies, but none the less. So what do you bowl on? I still stick by my belief I would average over 200 on a THS in league.

Monday nite league is a basic, Crown oil pattern 40ft, with a bit of OB outside of 10.  The condition isnt tough, but depending on what ball your using and where your playing the lane, there is not much hold if you put it left.

And normally torwards the end of the first game and beginning of the second game the track tends to burn up.  Even when i am playing left of 4th arrow, you notice the track burning up.   And this is because 90% of the bowlers on the league go right up the track with a sanded ball mid-performance ball, or a high performance ball.

My Thursday nite league is a 10-10 blocked.  but the dry is DRY lol.  My HOTROD hooks like a XFactor Xtreme on this shot lol.   Now depending on the lanes your on in this house, the lanes all transition differently lol.  the End lanes 1-2 and 13-14 all get crazy carry down, same with the middle lanes 5-6-7-8 yet all the other lanes dry up lol.

I'm bowling in 2 houses this year.  My local house is old wood in dire need of a resurface.  The heads are gone by the middle of game 1 and most lanes have at least a couple hang spots at the breakpoint.  Very frustrating.  Stringing strikes is almost impossible.  The key is avoiding splits and making spares.  I've been high average in this league the past two years with 204 and 199.  I'm currently at 187.

The other house is new synthetics with a medium volume typical house block.  Easy to find the pocket, but the trick is kicking out the 10 pin.  Two lefties are averaging 230, the high righty is 225 and I'm at 217.

The shot I'm seeing now is one of the tougher I've seen.  I thought after the first week that I was going to kill it, now I'm not so sure.  It's 27 feet, flat, buffed to 37.  Moderate puddle in the heads and sort of an inverted tube shot up around 3 board.  Hit 1 or 2 and your brooklyn.  Tug to 4 or 5 and your beak.  I can hit the hole up 12, but no carry.  Very speed sensitive as well.  Transitions oddly as well - I find myself moving right very early in the first game, then, usually late in game 2, I'm moving suddenly and a lot back left.  Seems to be a real test of hand/finger positions, accuracy and speed.  I do think that if your good enough or "on" enough it's a shot you can score well on, but it sure ain't "stand left, throw right."

There are 8 houses in our metro area and my travel league bowls at all 8.

They all run some variant of a 10 to 10 block. Some are run longer, some shorter, some with heavy oil, some lighter, some Anvilane, some AMF synthetics.

We bowl second shift so some are after 5 person men’s leagues, 5 person women’s leagues, mixed leagues, 3 person leagues, no leagues, open bowling, etc, etc, etc.

All have playable shots if you are willing to read the lanes and play the correct area of the lane. I have played from the 5 board to 25 board so far this year.

I bowl on Monday night on what has to be the oiliest lanes in the Twin Cities.  You have to play outside if you want the ball to move.  The outside five boards are actually pretty dry but anything left is oil and more oil.  Carry is tough.  The lanes change a fair amount during three games of league and the guys that don't know how to adjust complain about it, especially in the third game.  I think they are just getting good for me by the end of the third game.  Last week after league I threw some practice games and threw 17 strikes in a row and 24 out of 25.  I wish they had a late league.  No skid snap reaction here; it's early hook and set.

Mine sucks!! My Tuesday league has a Seniors league early that afternoon, plus open bowling. My Friday league has kids league and open bowl early that afternoon. So I bowl on crap! You can't keep anything right of the head pin, total freaking disaster. I never get a fresh shot, oil, anything. They strip and dress the lanes once a day, not between leagues, we only have 2 hours, to do 20 lanes!!!!!! AAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Well... I bowl on a lane condition where it will ALWAYS hit the headpin, soft, hard or strike. Just something to add even if it's not about lane conditions, the pins are SOOOO generous that you'll usually get a strike no matter where you hit the pocket. Brooks also get lots of strikes in my league.

My only league this year is a sport shot.  39' of heavy oil with <2:1 ratio in the heads from gutter to gutter.  The back ends are flying, so there is no push or pull area.

So no complaints that my average is 172.

House #1: usually lays down a med-med/heavy christmas tree pattern.  There is no OOB and the backends are just flying.  It's a very easy shot.

House #2:  usually lays down med/heavy block (I'd guess 38-41') with no OOB.  The backends are usually flying, but this house seems to be a bit more difficult than house #1.  This house sometimes (not often) puts an OOB area of 5-gutter.

House #3: The shot is a sport shot with weak backends.  The OOB for games 1-2 seems like 7-gutter but as the day progresses, the OOB 'lessens' to 5-gutter.  The  oil carries down very quickly, but there are some spots where there is dry.  If you hit the dry, the ball will just jump to the left side of the lane.  This is the most difficult and most unforgiving thing I've ever played on.

At houses #1 and #2, I usually bowl from 175-210.  At house #1 I average 184, and at house #3(sport shot) I'm currently averaging 148.  Sport shot bowling has helped me see that consistency, concentration and spare shooting is a very important part of the game!
