Do Balance Holes effect the hitting power of bowling balls?
« on: January 29, 2005, 03:19:23 PM »
Just read an article in BTM and one of the writers was saying a particular drilling didn't need a balance hole and then commented that that was a good thing...

with that statement , are balance holes then bad for the ball in any way?

either be it hitting power or some other negative effect.

i'm asking this question b/c i'm getting a ball drilled and it requires a balance hole.

Not sure why the writer would make that kind of a comment, maybe he thought it would smooth out the reaction too much, which is not what the ball was meant to do? In any case, no it does not reduce the hitting power of a ball, just affects the reaction shape.

One other thing is that the use of a weight hole is to remove excess weight in order for the ball to be legal for use in regards to side ,finger or thumb weight rules as stated in the ABC rule book.

Gypsies, all the above are correct in what they said.  Per Ray Edwards (Brunswick) and Mo Pinel (Morich) as of just last Tuesday at a seminar they stressed how the placement of the weight hole, location, depth, size all can fine tune the reaction of the ball, it can effect the space between each flare line, the width of the flare and how much it flares.  I am not an expert but those two guys are.  Hope this helps, good bowling.

Balance holes can be odd things. They are used to fine tune a balls reaction and also to bring it back into "legal" specs for the weights allowed in a ball.

The person writing the article might have been looking for a specific reaction and was glad not to have to guess at where or how deep a hole it would take.

Balance holes only affect the hitting power of a ball by altering the reaction just a bit. If your ball is just a bit weak or a bit late in it's reaction, a hole might help, might not, it just depends on what is happening and why.

I have seen balance holes in the right place under the right conditions make a ball look completely different than before, and I have also seen them in the wrong ball in the wrong place not make any difference whatsoever.

Before drilling any weightholes in your ball, check with a knowledgable driller. There may be a better alternative that will be much more effective.

i just had a balance hole put in for me and all it did was make the ball react earlier, by that i mean rev up faster, hitting power is still amazing
