Just out of curiosity. I went bowling today, had a couple good games but a few brooklyn strikes. For some reason those are annoying, despite being a strike. Especially if i'm having a problem and hitting heavy, next thing I know I go Brooklyn. My wife was with my and she was saying "A strike is a strike" but to me that's just poor, despite being a strike.
Just curious if they annoy you too.
-
Yes they do annoy me if it's no an easy shot. If it's on a tough shot and alot of people are doing it than i'm ok with it i guess I mean I definately dont celebrate them lol

Only when the game is on the line, and you throw the ball in the pocket and leave something solid...and your opponent tugs the ball 20 boards crosses over and gets a strike..then it's annoying.....other than that...nope...I look at it this way....You threw it just bad enough to carry

The brooklyn strike itself doesn't bother me because I'll take whatever break I can get. However, I'll be upset that I made such an errant shot that I completely missed the pocket.

No, in fact I try to convince people it was really a better ball. I explain thet the ball is going away from the pocket and still carries...anyone can hit the pocket and carry

I despise brooklyn strikes for one reason and one reason only
I threw the ball bad, had I thrown it right, it would have never gotten to that side. Brooklyn strike equals poorly executed shot. they should annoy everyone

Exactly. That's exactly how I feel about them. Otherwise, in a pinch, they work (although i'm not too happy about it). It does beat hitting the head pin square and leaving a split though!
-
i hate the fact that if im on a tough shot, and i pull it 2 boards, i get a split, if i pull it 5, i get a strike!? thats not right... i also hate when we bowl a team that is throwin brooklyns and im getting tapped. i really dont care for them at all

I'd be annoyed far too often if I were annoyed with Brooklyn strikes. Some games it seems like that's what carries best, so if I want to salvage an otherwise mediocre game, I better go for Brooklyn.

I used to hate the brooklyn side strikes. Then while at a PBA Pro-Am and threw 3 brooks in a row I was furious. Walter Ray Williams walks up to me and asked me what I was soo Pissed about. Said that brooklyn strikes are nothing pride worthy, makes me look like a poor bowler and said something else. He stopped me half way through the 3rd thing i was saying (probably why I cant remember it!) and says "Brooklyn strikes are the best thing in the world. Why?? Because they are horrible execution shots but they carried and gave you a break! My 1st 300 ever my 10th frame was all pulled shots and brooklyn strikes, I never hated them since, you shouldnt hate em either.
2 weeks later I go an shoot 286, I was tuggin the ball all night long for some reason, ended up with 5 brooklyn strikes in that 286 game. Since then I have never complained about a brooklyn strike. I do get a little annoyed though when I havnt missed the 1-3 all night and have little to show for it and the kid on the other team shot better because 90% of his brooklyn strikes fell!

No....It helps make up for those solid 10's and 9's from otherwise perfect looking pocket hits. Remember, bowling is chaos. Be thankful anytime you get a strike, no matter how you do so.

The breaks all balance out---a brooklyn strike will be paid back at some point by a pocket 7-10.
Therefore, no they dont bother me.

I couldnt agree more.

I'd rather be annoyed with a brooklyn strike than annoyed with a pocket 8-10.

I'm always annoyed while bowling, but brooklyn's don't make it worse.

Brooklyn strikes only annoy me if it is the "other guy" getting them, but don't annoy me if I am the one getting them.

Only if i have a good run going & then a Brooklyn comes along. But hey. Its a strike. You pulled it to far, you got lucky, correct yourself on the next shot. Simple as that.

So, what does everyone here do after a Brooklyn strike? Do you try to pick up speed on the next shot? That's what I do. Or change your position? I'll take'em anyway I can get'em, but I'll take a pocket any day.

The real question I have, has anyone purposely aimed brooklyn because it was a better shot? I have on many occastions, and done well.

no, I usually watch what is carrying better in the pocket, flush, high flush, or light flush, and that is where i go to.
I still contend a brooklyn strike is a reward for a bad shot
-
Regarding Brooklyns:
1. They do not annoy me in any way - if they're mine. I made a bad shot - fortunately, one bad enough to get away with it. I'll take it. The pin gods gave me one - they take away far more than they give.
2. They count the same. Unfortunate sometimes, but they do. Get over it.
3. I watched a friend of mine throw 11 in a row - 1-3 on the left lane, 1-2 on the right. There was no shot of any kind that she could hit at 11:30 at night on the right lane to get the ball any lighter than the 1-2-3 pocket, so she lined up Brooklyn on the one lane. Awesome.
4. I have thrown Brooklyns deliberately a few times. When someone really, really ticks me off, or really thinks they're a better bowler than they are. I posted a story a while back about a hothead who missed a bucket spare in the 10th, and I went off the sheet - I deliberately threw a brooklyn in the first ball of the 10th to shut him out... He yelled at me that I was no good, I beat him with a brooklyn. I calmly let him know that if he'd picked up the spare, I wouldn't have had a chance!! He then started throwing stuff. I had great teammates - the two following me each then deliberately threw brooklyns - just to really get to him. I think he shot 140 the next game. People who go nuts about brooklyns are easy targets.
5. I bowled on the #1 nationally ranked college team for years. We used to drill brooklyns. It was literally drilled into us that if we were to miss while pulling the ball, "pull it 3 boards" (of course, it can take a much bigger miss these days). The whole key to winning at bowling is to make your own breaks - when life gives you 10 pins, the gods can sometimes give you brooklyns.
6. To quote the late, great Earl Anthony - "it's not how; it's how many."
I've seen him win tournaments with brooklyns. If they're good enough for him, they're good enough for me.
7. I've never seen ANYONE give back the pins they got on a brooklyn.
There. I've said all I can think of on the subject right now!

Brooklyn's don't annoy me the first time that somebody throws one. Every bowler throws a bad shot every now and then. When it becomes annoying is when the bowler is too ignorant to adjust and get lined up. Meanwhile they think they're shooting the game of their lives because they have a six-pack on the Brookie side.
-
My reaction to a Brooklyn strike depends on the situation, as many others have stated.
1. If I throw one in practice, it annoys me a great deal, because I made a bad shot. Since the score in practice means nothing, there is no redeeming value to the strike.
2. If I throw one in competition, my level of annoyance depends on the situation as follows.
a. If I'm lined up and throw a Brooklyn, I'm mildly annoyed that I threw a bad shot, but I figure I'll throw it better the next time.
b. If I'm not lined up and throw a Brooklyn, I'm much more annoyed because I have to evaluate whether I threw it that badly or I'm just not even close to being lined up. Either way, even though I'm happy that the strike counts, I'm unhappy that I've wasted a shot in my search for a good line to the pocket.
3. In league, I usually don't get annoyed if someone throws a Brooklyn against me. However, I have lost a tournament championship to a guy who threw a bad shot, went through the face, and carried (just as bad as Brooklyn, maybe worse). That was very annoying!
4. On the flipside of that last point, I would love to be able to do what Mumzie described - throw a Brooklyn on purpose just to get into an opponent's head. I know plenty of guys that fry simply because of something their opponent is doing, and it is something over which they have no control. I just don't have the confidence to do it, so I haven't tried. OTOH, if my opponent is a good enough player, he/she would more than likely be able to tell that I had thrown a Brooklyn on purpose. There are people against whom I wouldn't want to try something like this, because when they get mad, they bowl better. Pete Weber is a good example of such a player (not that I've ever bowled against him

I think that if you're not somehow slightly embarrassed and apologetic when you get one, you don't truly understand bowling. Consider it like a let cord shot in tennis and acknowledge it wasn't a good shot.
However, if you're intentionally shooting for them because getting to your pocket isn't an option, go for it.

Brooklyn strikes demonstrate that you have the ability to correct, in mid approach, for an obvious bad rack.
Seriously, the strike itself doesn't bother me (sometimes you're the window, sometimes the bug), but I do question how I got the ball there - mechanics, lane transition, something is off and I need to figure it out asap.
