Do I have a Argument
« on: April 21, 2008, 07:18:13 AM »
O.K. so I went to the NC State Tournament this weekend in High Point and Asheboro. We bowled Sunday @ Tarheel Lanes for the team event @ 11:00am. We got there early to see the first squad finish up because they were not re-oiling the lanes for the next squad which we knew. Well you know they had the Womens State and the open tournament going on at the same time so we only had half the house. The 9:00am squad only had 4 teams that bowled on 19 & 20 and 21 & 22. Well my complaint is that we had to bowl on 19 & 20 and everyonelse had a fresh shot from the earlier shift. Now I knew going into that day that I was going to be bowling on a second shot but if that is the case then they should not have accepted just 4 teams for the 9:00am shift and made them bowl another time. Or come out and re-oil those 4 lanes so everyone is on the same field. I spent $150.00 in brackets and got killed because everyone around me had a fresh shot and my lanes were burnt up. Again if the field would have been even I would not complain. The state president of the NC USBC was there running that part of the event and she told me that I would have to live with it and that there was nothing that could be done. Comments please.!!!!!!!!

Not for the oil, but perhaps for the shift size. I agree that room should have been made on another shift. Granted, I killed on burned conditions in 2004 GA state (S&D). We had short fresh for team and still rocked it with a Blue Hammer!

No not really. I just bowled in a City tournament and it was my first ever...I bowled 2nd shift and found out I would be on burnt lanes, so yea i was pretty pissed..there were some that was on fresh shot. But doesn't matter. I wasn't bowling well. Think I placed 13th or something like that in singles and 3rd in doubles with my partner.

The lanes didn't really bother me that much because im used to practicing on them burnt up, but no there is nothing you can do really.

If you knew before hand, you shouldn't have dropped that much money in the brackets knowing half the field was on a fresh shot and you were on leftovers.  Not much you can do after the fact. It's not like they can demand everyone re-bowl their games.

Before bowling, you should have had a chance to argue your point and at least ask for all lanes on the squad to be bowled under the same conditions (re-oil the used lanes).  If they don't agree to your satisfaction, choice is yours to ask for a refund and not bowl, or reschedule to bowl a different time.  Once you bowl the games though, it's usually a done deal.

I don't think you've got too much to go on.

nope now if you were bowling the first shift and had open bowling on your pair then you could b@%ch but you bowl the second shift you should know better then to expect fresh oil unless it clearly stated in the tournament rules.

You sound like a seasoned veteran, personally I would not put that much into brackets knowing that I was going to be on one of the burnt pairs.

This happens weekly in these ABT and Nabi tournaments near me, half the reserved lanes are never used to later blocks so the used pairs are burnt up and worthless. I stopped wasting money on tournaments like these because of your dilemma, you got the shaft in theory but TD's could care less about you in the first place most are old guys and hags that have no other life but running these types of tournaments.

Next time defer to later block or bowl the first shift there is no way not to get that great fresh shot feeling, oh the smell of the ball actually reading the lane and consistently hooking at the same spot.

The same thing happened to a few guys in our group at nationals.  For minors they were on the end pair which did not have a team shift bowling before us.  Bad luck of the draw.

Nine and a ~ is dead on. You should have challenged this before bowling, or as soon as you realizeded something was not right.

You saw the train a comin, you chose to step in front of it, and now want to complain because you got ran over. What did you expect?

You are correct about the playing field not being even. If you had complained, and they refused to reoil your lanes, you could have demanded a refund, or bowled and got waxed.

Welcome to high volumne tournament bowling.  You are guaranteed NO SHOT.  And the shot will not be equal from squad to squad, and time to time.  So whoever can take the most advantage of the conditions given to them will win.  Some would say that's the best bowlers.  But given the lane conditions, maybe not.

I have been to so many tournaments where the lane machine has been broken for my squad.  Where I had lanes 1 and 2 and they didn't let the machine set and reoil the first 4 lanes.  Been on conditions where the lane machine was dead and they spray oiled my shift for the tournament.  Its seems to be my personal curse.  When the lane mechanic comes up to you and asks how you are doing and you reply "terrible"  blah blah blah.....and he replies.."well I think I found the problem".  and its your tournament shift.   Then tommorrow the lane mechanic's team bowls....... There's nothing you can do.

On any given tournament you are NOT going to be given consistent lane conditions and you are not going to be given any guarantees of fair lane play.  Doesn't exist.  You can look into it as far as you want.   Like Saturday was messed up, but Sunday the house mechanic bowled and 1,2  and 3rd place over all in the tournament was achieved over that squad compared to two weekends (8 squads).  And the first three winners all were from the local lane mechanic's team's squad time?

Welcome to tournament bowling

I would think that you have to know that going into the second shift, there is a chance you are on burnt lanes.  As such, you should have prepared for that shot.  Think about the bowlers that look at it that way and take the equipment they think they'll need....urethane and light reacting pearls....only to come in and see they are on a lane that's more oiled than anything they've got equipment for.

Who gets the short end there??  It's all a coin toss.  You make sure you've got something for both conditions!

I would bring it up. I was on the State board here in Minnesota and would have loved for people to be active enough to bring it up. I would try. You have nothing to lose.
