Beginner's Bowling Club
« on: October 26, 2004, 05:49:04 AM »
I'm working on this program now, and will let you all know how it goes.  Perhaps I can get some feedback in this forum about it.

I notice a major problem with the transition from recreational bowler to competitive league.  I am working on starting these Beginner Bowilng Clubs in some of my member bowling center, in hopes that they can get at least 6 bowlers to sign up to meet once per week for $20/week for 6 weeks.

For $20, each bowler gets 2 hours of bowling and instruction from a USA Certified coach.  Each bowler also gets 3 free game passes good anytime that center has open bowling.  Each week the club will go through a different lesson or group of lessons and will practice whatever is teached in those lessons.

During the first session, I would like to invite some of the area's better bowlers to come out and bowl with these newbies so that they can see the wide variety of styles that score well, and so they can also see which fundamentals seem to make the game easier.

Perhaps the last week, they can have a little fun sweeper or some sort of competition that includes pizza and prizes.  Then maybe they can graduate to a new Intermediate Bowler's Club with more advanced lessons and such.

Wouldn't this help to assimilate new bowlers into our leagues?  I think this would help our current bowlers (the ones who bowl the first week with the newbies) to remember what it was like the first start bowling, and maybe they'll lose their attitudes a bit and welcome the new bowlers a little more nicely into their leagues!

Feedback?  Ideas to go along with this one?

MichiganBowling -- This sounds like a geat idea to me.  I've printed it out and will give to our center's manager for consideration.  This could be a great summer program.  One thing to include, but might fit better in the intermediate program - the ins and outs of league bowling.  To include, but not limited to, alternating lanes, handicap calculation, lane courtesy, schedules, filling out recap sheets, guaranteed league payment, etc., etc.  --  JohnP

Don't forget to show them where the bar is! Does the $20 include the first pitcher? LOL. J/K man!

I think the idea is very good.  What I really like is the coaching instruction - I feel that many new league bowlers get tired of everyone around trying to "help" them with their game.  Joe tells them to move right while Tom tells them to move left, and Larry is giving pointers on how to get the ball to hook more while Fred is telling them that a big hooking ball isn't important.  Whew, that's a lot to put up with week in and week out when all you want to do is focus on keeping the ball on the lane and knocking more pins down!

Being in an environment where everyone is on the same level is an excellent way to introduce new bolwers.  Then they won't feel like they don't belong, and in this instance, it doesn't sound like much competition is involved, so they can have fun and learn without feeling bad for making the team lose.  Great idea, what more can I say?

Sounds alot like what used to happen in good establishements in the 70's and 80's. I dont know if there are alot of USA certified coaches around to support the concept. And somewhere along the way there must be some instruction on lane curtesy and the rules of the game.

But it is what should be happening to create and capture interest. Good luck!

Sounds like a great idea to me also.  They get to learn how to be a better bowler without worrying about their score in a league environment.  Basic fundamentals go a long way.  There is so much variety in the styles of successful bowlers today.  Too many beginning bowlers might confuse themselves trying to copy a dozen different styles they see in league.  Getting someone to work with directly, they should be able to determine what works best for them.  Build up their confidence.  Don't try to tear down their whole game unless they do something drastically wrong (like finish on the wrong foot) and want to change.  Everyone has more fun when they knock down more pins.

Good luck Brian!!!

Only thing I can think of is when I have worked with beginners it is of utmost importance to build up the good points of their game rather than point out all of their faults.  Sure makes for a more optimistic bunch that want to work on their game.

Hope it works for you.
