I have yet to meet a lefty that swings the ball like a Tommy Jones. Usually, I dont even see them going past the 3rd arrow. I myself am a lefty and have come to attribute this to lack of play on the left side of the lane. Since really only 1 or 2 bowlers play on the left side at one time, there really isnt a bumper to work off of, so we have to play straighter. What do you guys think?

I've seen left handers that throw with some hand, I think it just comes down to ratios. There are far less left handers, so you're going to see fewer Tommy Jones. Take 100 people representing the ratio of righties to lefties, and even if 1 out of 5 of each hand is a cranker, you'll have far fewer lefty crankers than righties.

Lefties can play somewhat straighter because they don't have as many players eating up their shot and creating a rough house track.

Usually no need to, even if you have hand as the head oil doesn't get chewed up as much on the left side. Not saying that people don't play the bigger swing but usually the shot doesn't call for it.

i doubt i'll ever see a lefthander play as deep as jason couch----he's the premier power player from the left side.

I don't know, I think that PA and Couch swing it quite a bit. But most of them play straighter because of the lighter traffic on the left side. But I've seen a few lefties that hook the ball quite a bit in some of my leagues as well.

i do sometimes, if need be, but i really dont like to do it. the more boards you cover, the more there are to miss by. besides the shot never calls for it unless its REALLLY short. and the norm around here is 42 so that dosent happen very often. becides i like to have the power to be able to do it, but play decently strait and save all that energy for the pins instead of covering boards....

well thats most likely from not having much hand. 230 is pretty low on the specturm(sp?) and becides 20-10 isint really what i would call a swing, i was thinking a swing was feet anywhere from 30 or farther right, to about 5ish at the break. witch isint really that hard if the shot is there(if you force it then obviously you wont score), i mean, if you do it more than 1 or 2 times you get the hang of it, but i prefer weaker balls and letting them go alittle straiter, 25 with feet and anywhere from 5-10 is where i start... and i dont really have all that much power...

i agree I am a lefty and while it is true most lefties do not have the hand that right handers have, the reason is cause they didnt have to develop it. I had to learn to play staighter on left cause i have two other lefties that play straight on my team and I crank it well by middle of second game they have so much carry down in my breakpoint that i cant get anythingto pocket it is most times quite a hinderance having hand on left side if there is other lefties and it is also true that we dont have the bump on the left side that right handers have. Now i can play anywhere on in most conditions and it made me a stronger player. that is just mytwo cents onthis topic

Bones, you are having a senior moment. On most house conditions, lefties have more room for error. On a wet dry, they can bounce it off the dry without having to worry much about carrydown or someone else eating up the "corners" -- i.e., the midlane hold area -- for their shot. Similarly, on a taper or crown, they can generally play straighter and further out because no one else is eating up the track oil -- meaning if they pull it, the pull area stays longer and they can still bounce it off the dry with hold to the break point much longer than righties.
