do ppl still bowl second shift?

It seems in my area, we are the only ones that have a second shift league. Nowhere else in a 40 mi. radius do I know bout a late league in other houses. I wonder if this is a rare thing nowadays..

My Tuesday night scratch trios league is a second shift league. It's probably the best payout league in Northern California with sponsorship from Black Oak Casino, Central Coast Pest Control and EA Dublin Bowl all providing prize funds.

It's a second shift because of the traffic conditions around the SF Bay area as far as I know.

Our Tuesday night scratch league starts at 9:00pm and we're usually finished around 11:15, sometimes earlier. 

The shot starts out pretty good, and depending on who you follow, can stay that way.  Sometimes the backends can get UGLY though.  I enjoy the challenge of having to follow the transitions.

I prefer late leagues because of "daddy duties" after work. From picking up the kids, cooking, and homework.

In SoCal, many of the better leagues are second shift, following the mixed handicap leagues that generally start around 6:00pm. I know of at least 4-5.
 
My 9:00pm scratch league experience mirrors what notclay described. But with the core league members continuing to age, I'm wondering how many more years it will stay healthy and last.

We have a couple of different Pro Shop owners in the league as well, so they need time to finish at their shops and get there.

It's not a draft league, but almost all the teams remain from year to year, so it's a set number. We have a waiting list this year for teams wanting to bowl.

I travel a bit myself to be in the league. I live in Stockton and Dublin is about 50 minutes away in light traffic, so it's a commitment.

Not many later leagues here either.  It is unfortunate what has happened to bowling over the past 25 years. Back in the 1990-91 season I was bowling in a 56 lane house on Tuesday nights..2nd shift 9 p.m. start or so and the house was full--no available lanes..there was even a 3rd shift league that came in after we were finished bowling late nite...that league if I remember only had a dozen teams or so...now a days not only will you not find 2nd shift leagues...at some places you can even find a lane for open bowling during the 1st shift 6pm - 630 pm league times, something virtually unheard of back in the early 90's.  I guess times change.

I know of 3 second shift leagues around me
the one Lane (notclay) mentioned
one that has a 3 person ladies followed by a mixed handicap
and
a youth league followed by a men's handicap

Milo, that's some dedication right there sir!! That's 1.5 hours for me lol. When I lived in Washington, most second shift leagues were draft leagues, some with sponsors. And I know some who commute too.

Bowling isn't as popular nowadays unlike before. Maybe with open bowling, or rec bowling increasing, these people may find interest in bowling leagues. This summer I talked to several guys who meet up to open bowl every week and half (5 of them) asked about leagues and were interested in joining.

Every night all summer, there are available lanes for open bowling in this 32 lane house. Before I had to wait till 9:30 every night except sundays.

We have one second shift league where I bowl.  It has a lot of added money so it is a very popular scratch High Low doubles league to keep it competitive.  I personally have a few problems with the league in that we have a 9:30 start time but cannot get on the lanes until 10:00 because of the SOCIAL aspect of bowling that is sweeping the nation.  We very seldom finish before 11:30.  We have a lot of younger players now who can approach Warp 15 with their ball speed that now have a definite advantage. Unfortunately with the USBC direction of eliminating the bowlers who made the ABC/USBC successful I would surmise that the bowlers who used to bowl in 3 to 4 leagues a week are now in the 50 to 80 year old age group and are now quitting bowling. Rant off.
