Do the looks of a ball effect your game?
« on: April 12, 2005, 12:44:20 PM »
What i mean by this is if you personally think a ball "looks" better going down the lane will you in turn throw the ball better and have more confidence in that ball....

say for example throwing a plain black ball with not much going on on it against a ball with swirled patterns galore and bright colors...if you think that this ball looks "cool" going down the lane will that ball increase ur confidence?  Or maybe you like the plain black ball and dont like distractions (ie Brian Voss) will throwing a ball like this improve your confidence and your game?

me for example...i love the way my ultimate inferno looks going down the lane with the contrast of the bright yellow logos and inserts and the dark colors of the ball...i actually think i throw this ball better than others...

something to debate....what do you guys think?

Really doesn't effect me, thing that effects me the most is the past experience. If I have had great success with a ball I might tend to throw it somewhere even if I know I should not. Colors really don't matter for me, as long as it isn't too horrible.

Nope, doesn't really matter to me.  I don't watch the ball, I watch the ball's reaction.

I hate to say it but it really does for me. If my ball looks great spinning or rolling down the lane it will give me a boost of confidence. I know that this shouldn't be the case but it is.

Maybe if it's SUPER sexy like the Intense Inferno, but in general, for me... not really.

I remember the Tude series---the Tude 1 was the only ball I ever had that I couldnt tell if I threw it good or not (this was before some refining in my game so now I can feel a good shot or a bad shot). I would let go of that ball and some shot I would see green and some I would see black (I thought it was green and black with an orange pin). God the days of the chuck and duck---now I have to bowl and stuff. God if I could go back and be stupid again, Id have more honor scores and average 20 pins less......

Great Topic!

It affects how I feel about a ball BEFORE I ever throw it and how soon I will throw it. Like the Intense Inferno reminded me a clown ball- ridiculous. Took me quite a while before I got the nerve to even bring it to a center to throw.

Once I start throwing a ball, it makes zero difference how it looks. I don;t see any colors on my own personal ball - too focused on watching the ball's reacition as it goes down the lane.

Now that I started using the Intense regularly, its hitting power is as great as any ball I have EVER used. Now I use it too long and don't change quickly enough. I always figure I can force it to work, which you know is hardly ever true ...

Got a Columbia Ego a while back. Took a long time to drill it because of its odd color scheme - can't decide if it's ugly or beautiful. Drilled it last week and tried it Monday - GREAT ball reaction. Love it   ...  Now.

Similar story for the Dyno-Thane AU79. Pictures of it were so HIDEOUS. I finally got sick of all the great reviews and great results and bought one - one of the most beautiful balls ever made. Pictures show and pale gold and purple, while the ball is actually a beautiful red and gold. Works great also!!

FYI my driller said many Brunswick balls made of the bluish purple color, like the Ice Blue Power Groove pearl, never sold, no matter how good it was because many male bowlers would not order it because it looked too gay. I was in shock when he said that.

for me, the look of a ball will kind of decide what i pull outta the bag first. for instance, got a crash recently, not exacly a gorgeous ball, personally i think it's kind of ugly. the thing is, even when i know i should probably be throwing it, i'll be throwing my triton heat b/c i love the look of that ball. eventually i'll switch and think "duh, why didn't i do that sooner" course, this only happens on the rare occasion that i run into a condition that i can't use my triton heat...not often.

The actual look of the ball itself doesn't typically matter to me unless it's one with a hugh patch of color in one spot.  Then it just looks odd going down the lane.

I do however hate to see my grips spin up on a ball.  That's why I switch to black inserts and a red thumb slug...just something I did and like the look of.

I actually like to see the grips...it helps me watch the roll of the ball.  As stated before i love the way my ultimate inferno and now shock and awe looks goin down the lanes, but part of this is the ease of watching the ball roll...for me with the brighter colors of the logos and the inserts i can watch the transition between skid and roll easier, but its also very pleasing to the eye...so dont get me wrong i am watching the roll of my ball but i still think i roll this ball better than some "plain" balls i have thrown in the past, again this is just me and its purely a mental factor in my book

I black out the logos and use black slugs and grips. This forces me to watch the ball path and not get distracted counting revs.

I do use an Ebonite Tai Chi as a spare ball because I dig it so I guess looks do matter a little for me.

I had a Raspberry Lane 1 that I sold partly because of that awful pink color.Every time it didn't carry the hit I'd get the "Hey Alice where's your husband?" cracks.

P.S. My Red Vendetta is a great looking ball with black logos and I do enjoy watching that ball travel the lane.

The color of the ball makes no difference to me.  I do, however, like to put contrasting inserts in the ball:  Hot pink in blue, green in orange, that sort of thing.  No real reason.

Certain balls, such as the Storm soccer ball or a dark ball with white finger plugs, give me direct feedback on the ball's rotation.  This can be a great help on certain conditions that force me to make a change in my release to change axis rotation or tilt... when the ball doesn't get to flush pocket, being able to see the rotation tells me if I made a release mistake or and adjustment mistake.

If you look good you feel good, you feel good and you play good.

Same goes with my bowling balls!

I actually don't mind what they look like, but it's a nice bonus if the ball looks good as well.

I am getting quite sick of the blue colour balls really; I have a blue Power Groove, blue Ultimate Inferno, blue Uranium, blue Zone Classic , 2 blue X Factors, blue RevMaster, blue Messenger Ti Pearl and blue EMB xf.

That's why it's refreshing to see an original pink Hammer and a gold Golen Nugget!

On edit, I'm with Ragnar Floggurass, I too like to put contrasting inserts in the ball.  And it's always nice too have a cool looking, unusual spare ball!  I have a Storm baseball, and there're many times you get kids and open bowlers come up to you and ask you questions about, using the Baseball as ice-breaker.
