Do the looks of a ball effect your game?
« on: April 12, 2005, 12:44:20 PM »
What i mean by this is if you personally think a ball "looks" better going down the lane will you in turn throw the ball better and have more confidence in that ball....

say for example throwing a plain black ball with not much going on on it against a ball with swirled patterns galore and bright colors...if you think that this ball looks "cool" going down the lane will that ball increase ur confidence?  Or maybe you like the plain black ball and dont like distractions (ie Brian Voss) will throwing a ball like this improve your confidence and your game?

me for example...i love the way my ultimate inferno looks going down the lane with the contrast of the bright yellow logos and inserts and the dark colors of the ball...i actually think i throw this ball better than others...

something to debate....what do you guys think?

The looks of a ball do not really turn me on... rather off, when it looks very daring. But in fact I like balls which help me recognize what tha ball is doing, when and how it breaks and how fast it revs.

Therefore, balls like the Inferno with 2 high contrast color blotches are very nice for this purpose (do not own one, just an opinion), as is a high contrast balance hole on the PAP. I even experimented with white tape set into the inner rim of my balls' X-holes, and this is quite revealing - even if the ball colour does not tell you much about the ball's reaction itself.

Another option I used for training and videotaping is to stick about 6" of 1" wide painter's masking tape between PAP and my ring finger hole, plus another 3" piece of tape crosswise on the PAP, when there was no balance hole available. The tape will not make contact with the lane, but you can easily spot what the ball is doing and make videotape analysis on your style, ball recation and on hand revs/RPM.

As much as I like a nice-looking ball, I hate to see my inserts so I use only black grips and slugs.
I also DON'T like to see multiple-colored lettering, like Brunswick is so fond of using. For that matter, I prefer to darken in the lettering if possible, but I can't do that with the Brunswicks since their lettering is flush with the ball.

I have an Ultimate polished and it looks awesome too! Since it comes off my hand the nicest, I prefer to throw that ball over any other. Plus the fact that it looks sweet, it's the first ball out of my bag on any condition.
