Setting up tournaments...need suggestions
« on: May 05, 2003, 07:36:13 AM »
I am working on setting up some tournaments at the center I work at as the snack bar manager.  I am thinking about doing a different type of tournament each weekend of the month (EX.  so every 1st Saturday would be no tap)...

WHAT TYPE OF TOURNAMENTS WOULD YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN???

I want to do a variety (some for the more experienced bowlers and some for the average league bowler)...

any suggestions would be appreciated

(I am already thinking of doing a 9 pin no tap, scotch doubles, and a decent paying scratch tournament...)

I really liked the format we had in Mandeville last weekend.  Team event with six games of match play.  The event was capped to 32 teams and we used a 32-week league schedule for the rotation, with a blind draw for team number.

There were 100 bonus pins up for grabs in each match, 10 on each individual match and 60 for the team win.  It was a scratch event, so I don't know how much interest would be generated for a handicap version in the same format.  I could easily see something like that being halved to 10/10/30 to run as a doubles event.

Guaranteed prize funds are nice but some proprietors are unwilling to take that gamble, even though it should pay off in the end if the tourneys are an ongoing venture.  Some bowlers will not enter unless the first few positions are guaranteed.

A tourney I heard about, but never bowled in is a "Best Ball tourney".  You pair up with someone (or I guess it could be more than 2) and each throw a frame.  Whoever has the best frame, the team uses it.  You do this for however many games you are bowling and the team with the highest "Best Ball Series" wins.  I think it is a great format for a "fun" tournament, but probably not for anything serious.
