What's the difference between....???
« on: September 20, 2004, 06:09:11 AM »
What's the difference between the types of bowling styles and how do they benefit you or work against you on certain lane conditions.  like a ball that arcs throughout the entire lane, long and snap, long and arc, hook and stop reaction and any other ones that you can think of.  Also, which one do you prefer or use mostly?  do any of those reactions on the lanes create better pin action or carry than the others? I'm just curious so sorry about all the questions.  Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

To give general answers, since everyone is different in some aspects...

Crankers are known to get great carry (get away with weaker hits) and be able to over power most lane conditions.  However, they are also prone to injury, fatigue, and inconsistency.  Also are more apt to leave some nasty wide open splits and crazy leaves due to the higher power blowing pins out instead of deflecting into each other.  Crankers usually favor a drier shot so they can get a stronger ball reaction and less skid.

Strokers are typically more consistent, due to less of the swing depending on muscle.  They also are condition dependent, with the best players bieng able to adjust to the most lane conditions.  Due to less power and revs, they often will have to have a more perfect shot in order to strike and will lose some breaks here and there to burnout or lack of carry.  I think strokers have to pay more attention to lane transition, ball reaction and pin action in order to get an idea of what is going on rather than the grip it and rip it of a cranker.  Strokers usually perfer a wetter shot, so they don't have to throw too hard to keep the ball on their perferred shot.

Tweeners are the best of both worlds, but are prone to each side's problems as well.  Depending on which side they favor more, of course.

As for balls, skid/snaps to me tend to represent a stroker shot.  Lots of power, but also lots of potential inconsistency.  I cannot control them, and they stay in the bag unless I'm totally lost.
Arcing balls represent a lot of the stroker shot, where they may be more consistent but also require greater accuracy and touch.  You must have the ability to hit your mark and keep a sharp eye out for transition, and ball reaction.

For me, I am a stroker and play that the best.  I cannot be consistent powering the ball up too often, and am at my best when slower ball speeds are required.  I like watching a good cranker though, nothing like seeing someone who is accurate and can blow apart the rack consistently.  I personally think a stroker matches up on more shots than a cranker, but if a person can play both styles to some degree they will be a very dangerous bowler.
