Do we really need High Performance balls anymore??
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:45:14 AM »
with the amount of oil houses put for THS, do we really need high performance balls? My thinking is toning down my arsenal and getting mid-low performance stuff. What do yall think on this topic.

Current Arsenal:

RADICAL SLANT
MOTIV CRUEL C51 LE

BLACK DIAMOND

BANK SOLID

Short answer: No.

I only bowl on THS so I can only speak on that pattern. I use a Slingshot as my one and only ball and I see no reason to spend $150 on a high end ball when I can be near the top in my leagues with an "entry level" ball.

In my opinion on a THS you only really need* 1 ball, because you can get the ball to the pocket no problem, so when you're in the pocket, you want to make small adjustments with things like speed, rev rate, angle or axis rotation to get the ball to carry when it hits the pocket.

*I'm putting alot of emphasis on the need here, obviously it's beneficial to have different equipment

Only on high performance lane conditions.

On the normal THS, the answer is usually no.

( Edited because I realized my initial response sounded condescending and pompous. My bad.)

I can strike with a Tropical Heat on a house shot. (Or hell, I've shot huge games with urethane and even plastic on house shots even though I have no hand!) That being said, I see just enough oil that almost all of my best scores this year have come with a high-end ball. So yes, I have plenty of reason to throw high performance gear on a THS. But I also am not you. I don't have your release, and I don't see the same lane conditions you do. The THS I bowl on in one house has quite a bit of oil, and the other one I usually see has sloppy backends where weaker equipment tends to skate through the breakpoint on me easily. I tend to need more help from the ball than most people because I have a lower rev rate and tend to stay up the back of the ball a fair bit (I can get around it to create more entry angle, but I lose some accuracy and try to avoid it whenever I can). So my case is probably totally different than yours.

Depends on who you are and the shot your center puts out.  I bowled regular in two houses and subbed in a third and in one house I threw my Track 300C and in the other two houses it bounced between my Pure Physics and Track 715C.  If you bowl in a single house that puts out a low volume shot you probably would not need a high performance ball, but that does not mean that everyone else is bowling on the same conditions.

IDK where you guys bowl but most houses I bowl in have plenty of volume and all the best bowlers use the higher end stuff, even on 2nd shift. The only higher avg bowlers that use the mid to lower end stuff have tons of hand. I have some lower end equipment but it only comes out of the closet on marathon type tourney's.

It depends upon the player and the bowling center.

It completely depends on what the house puts out. At one place I bowl, I can get away with mid-low end performance in using either a Roto Grip Nomad Dagger or a Rising Star and just making simple moves. Only twice have I used the Storm VG Nano over there, and the Anarchy once. If it gets dry enough, I could probably still throw my old Cuda/C that I still have sitting in the basement.

However at the other place I bowl, they use heavy volume (and do lay out Route 66 frequently) and thats even with the 2nd shift. At that place, I use the VG Nano and now the Anarchy almost exclusively. I've seen people use the Track 715A, Columbia World Beater/Pure Physics, or stronger stuff from Storm such as the Marvel or Virtual Energy.

My arsenal

Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 4000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished
Current Ball Arsenal
Heavy:
MOTIV Jackal Legacy
MOTIV Mythic Jackal

Med-Heavy:
MOTIV Trident Odyssey
MOTIV Forge Fire
MOTIV Covert Revolt

Medium:
MOTIV VIP ExJ Sigma
MOTIV Sigma Sting
MOTIV Pride Solid

Medium-Light
MOTIV Venom Shock
MOTIV Tribal Fire

Depends on where u bowl.  My house put down allot of oil and the backends arent clean.  Also no outside boards to bounce and we have carry down.  Totally screwed shot...

That is a tough question to answer. It depends on the bowler and how the bowler bowls and what condition/s he sees.

If you are only on THS with the pond in the middle and you  like to play inside more then the high end gear might be very useful. If you are bowling on alot Tournement patterns i.e. PBA/ Intl patterns which are bone dry then no they are not nesscary.

With balls like the Columbia Freeze, Storm Tropical Heats, Roto Grip Nomads, and other mid-low priced balls work so well on many house shots, it could be hard to justify the higher end equipment.

Bottom line is nothing is set in stone.  Get the equipment that works for you on the condition you will face.

You don't want to be caught out one day when your house changes something and you only have a Tropical Heat.  If you're going to have an arsenal, it should be well-rounded.  Don't get 3 or 4 balls that all pretty much do the same thing.  I know it might be frustrating for that brand new Nano to sit in the bag constantly, but one day, you might be happy it was there while everyone else can't get their ball to wrinkle.
