Do you bowl against your opponent during league?
« on: January 14, 2011, 09:50:25 AM »
Obviously it's all about the team but do you ever try to beat your opponent in league from what order your bowling in to that person is? Try any gamesmanship?

In one league I'm anchor in the 5/5 position so usually I'm against the best which motivates me. In my other league I'm the lead off in the 1/4 position.

If it's one of those "just here to have fun bowlers" then I don't even pay attention even if they get a high game and beat me but the ones I love is the confident or coincided or cocky whether it be male or female and whether it be a medium or  high or really high average bowler it makes me want to beat that person  and bowl harder then ever as if it was a PBA title game.

Then like many I suspect don't even know or care about this and just bowl for themselves or their team.

Nope. Every time it is about 900, or 899, or 890, or 879, or 650 or just however they fall that night.

oh yea of course i do...... doesnt matter if its a 140 bowler or 220 bowler, my goal is to pound them into the ground by as many pins as possible.....

I figure if i can beat the guy across from me by as many pins as possible, i did my part to help out the team...

heck our team even does a 1$ high game pot, so i dont even like losing to my teammates lol......

There's a few bowlers I enjoy matching up against or work a little harder to beat head to head.  But, unless it's a league where you must beat your individual opponent to win your point, I generally don't worry about it.  As long as my team wins it doesn't matter if I carry the load or shoot 150 and get killed by my opponent.

Typically I don't even pay much attention to the opponent unless it is a match point league. Now there are certain teams or bowlers that I enjoy competing against that I will try to beat, but really in the spirit of helping my team win the game. I bowl lead off in every league and most tournaments, so I am there to  set the pace for my team. That is my job and most of the time the guy on the other side really doesn't affect my game, mental or physical.

It doesn't matter if you beat your man by 50, if your four teammates each lost to theirs by 15.  It's a TEAM effort.

We actually have a league where how you do against your opponent counts towards the team points for the night.  It's a 30 point system, and each game is a total of 8 points, and then the remaining 6 for series.  5 points a game for team win, and 1 point per personal win, then 3 points for team series and a point apiece for personal series.  Kind of nice to have that system in place in case a teammate has an off night or something, at least it's not a total loss if you can manage to scrape out a few points, and it makes it more competitive.  Also have an eliminator, and a random match play in that league, tons of stuff going on all at the same time.  Otherwise, not really.  I just try to beat everyone on the pair, teammates, other team, whatever, that way I know for sure I did my part.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

Just for those who don't know this it's called a Match Point system.

I have only bowled in matchplay leagues for years because of this. I love the one on one element of it. So if I am the number 4 bowler I am bowling against their number 4 bowler. I can earn 4 points by beating them all three games and total. These points that we earn for the one on one are worth half of the overall points available in the match with team games and total being worth 5 each.

i am focused on my game. i do not concern myself with the man opposite of me. my job is to throw strikes and that is what i try to do every frame. if i can do that i don't have to worry about what anyone else does. in turn that will put pressure on the other team or player.

Yeah, for me league is glorified practice. Every game is a chance at 900, 800, 700, or 300. Other than that, if it isn't a tournament and we're in matchplay I could care less how the other person is bowling unless I'm lost or I need information.

I only try to throw each shot the best that I can.  Bowling is not really a competetive sport for me as there are

so many uncontrollable outside factors which affect scoring, that it cannot really be considered..  Luck alone is

a huge factor.   I'm sure that another factor is that I have been through so many competitions in my life that

bowling just doesn't affect me like that.  High School--football, basketball, baseball; college--football, base-

ball; high school coaching--football, baseball.  Bowling for competition just doesn't turn me on.  It should also

be pointed out that I am a senior and have seen many more important things in my life than to worry about

bowling.

I always try my best and get the highest score. My husband and wife team mates just try to beat each other, which would be fine with me.  The problem is that they both suck.  So we just keep losing as a team no matter how well I bowl. I'm picking a new team next season.

I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.
