Do you guys really see that much oil?
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:07:04 PM »
I'm at a loss as to how some of you see enough oil to throw the big hooking balls during league. I have average speed, rotation, and tilt, average or maybe slightly above average revs, and I still seem to be throwing urethane on a regular basis in my two leagues, plus a secone house during no tap tournaments and open play, and a third house during open bowling. I do have a sinister that I love, but that is drilled a bit weaker and is for when I am forced inside, but I don't always have the head oil. Do most houses put out more oil than what I see in my area? Or do most of you just have the oilers for tournaments with heavy patterns?

It's difficult to compare the amount of oil volume without knowing the actual volume
numbers that are being applied in your particular house. In addition, there are other factors involved as well. Such as the age and actual type of lane surface, the length of the oil pattern, type of oil, humidity, etc.

I am a senior old-school stroker with low to medium revs but with slightly higher than normal speed. You could categorize me as a speed dominant player. For me, I tend to match up far better with aggressive balls on the majority of conditions I face. This includes typical house patterns, as well as the more challenging (sport style) patterns.
I can count on one hand how many times I used urethane balls in the past several years.

It is not always a matter of volume of oil.
People have all different combinations of rev rate and ball speed. The ratio of speed to revs is an important criteria for the strength of ball needed on various oil amounts.
When you're speed dominant (ball speed is high in relation to your rev rate), you can, in fact, need to use much stronger balls than if you're matched or rev dominant.

I have a friend who is speed dominant, even though I'd estimate his rev rate to be around 175. On the same amount of oil on which he uses a Sinister or a Lucid to play 8/9 at the arrows out to 5 at the breakpoint, I, who am rev dominant, am playing 17/18 at the arrows, getting it out to 7/8 at the breakpoint with a Tropical Breeze. Needless to say, between the very strong balls he is using and his far outside angle, his carry percentage is much higher than mine.

Such is life.

I do bowl tournaments, so I have a need, I'm speed dominate, and around me, most places put out enough oil for me to use a Dream On, or lower. I get stuck on the side to side reaction. Whatever smooths out the house shot isnwhat I use. Although, I will use a Night Hawk all day on a shorter house shot.

I DO see plenty of oil.  Kegel Ice for 42 feet at one house, and the other 40 feet with plenty in the middle so that it forces me closer to friction for the most part. Tonight I will be using a Nirvana and Einstein on the Kegel Ice.

The lane surface means a lot.  If you're bowling on wood, it doesn't matter how much they put down, because it will typically change rapidly.  Wood is soft.  I used to bowl a league on wood lanes years ago and they flooded the middle pretty good.  It didn't matter.  I moved an average of 3 or so boards after game one, and another 3-5 each game thereafter.  That league was also 5 man teams, which would tear up a shot faster than four person teams (obviously).

Old wood, league, hardly any tournaments, medium/low speed, medium revs...I start with a RIDE and end with it, usually anyway.  If I need a little more pop, I go to the JOYRIDE.  That's about it for me at my house. 8)

Kind of a funny story in my opinion.  At the start of the season, house gets brand new kegel machine and puts out one of the standard (very easy) kegel house patterns.  Slightly more oil than last year.  Still very very easy for the big guns to average 230+ but they couldn't wheel the whole lane.  Had to play a little straighter.  After 2 weeks of bitching, the shot changes back to the drier version so the big guns could hook the whole lane and look "cool" I guess.

In this day and age, I guess no one wants to have to play less than a 10-20 board swing.  "Have to play 11 to 8 with my massive release; well that's just too slick!"  Even though they still shot 700 to 800 those first 2 weeks.  And I am talking about the 20-30 year old studs with massive revs rates and ball speed.

I never see much oil even on a fresh shot, and like Others have described even though I am low revs (about 225) my speed is slow and my tilt is high. So my LT-48 is pretty much all I ever use. Maybe my Melee Jab. I could never use those big hook balls.

my sport league uses at least 1, many times 2 patterns that will be longer/heavier than most other patterns.

Last year, we bowled on badger for 6 weeks.

most of the time, for house shots I am using balls like a freeze, street rod, ride.  There is one house that I get my best reaction from an old worn out marvel, with a lot of polish on it.

Everyone wants to hook the ball coast to coast, even though many would score better if they played a little straighter.

I didn't consider the lane surface, but most of what I bowl on is wood lanes. I have some occasional synthetic lanes in the winter, and only bowl on synthetic in the summer, but the summer league doesn't put out a lot in the way of oil. A decent amount, but not a lot. It seems that a lot of people are like me in not throwing the strong stuff much lol

Everything would be dependent on the bowlers stats. the trajectory or preferred part of the lane and the format of the league whether 3-person vs. 5 person. On the majority of THS lane conditions there is very little volume on the outside of the lane so if you are a down and in player liking to play that part of the lane it would seem there is very little oil.  Move deeper into the puddle on a 12:1 THS condition and there is volume.  Some THS lengths maybe start at 38' to 42'...the longer will play like more volume.  Then, add in lane surface and it's a gamut for many different bowler styles from speed dominant players to rev dominant players.  Sooooo, one bowlers no volume to another's lots of oil is very dependent on what you really think lots of oil is and you individually with your stats., where you play the lane, surface and so many other factors.

+ 1; I bowl league in 2 places: an AMF house and a non-AMF house. I can see the difference in oil volume when I use my Nu Ball unit. After the same amount of games, the ball that I use in the AMF house will have a slick surface but no drops of oil in the pan. The main ball that I throw in the non-AMF facility will be soaked with oil, and there will be several drops of oil in the pan under the ball.

I am not complaining about the conditions, but the proof is in the pudding.
