Do you guys really see that much oil?
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:07:04 PM »
I'm at a loss as to how some of you see enough oil to throw the big hooking balls during league. I have average speed, rotation, and tilt, average or maybe slightly above average revs, and I still seem to be throwing urethane on a regular basis in my two leagues, plus a secone house during no tap tournaments and open play, and a third house during open bowling. I do have a sinister that I love, but that is drilled a bit weaker and is for when I am forced inside, but I don't always have the head oil. Do most houses put out more oil than what I see in my area? Or do most of you just have the oilers for tournaments with heavy patterns?

There is a LOT of oil in Las Vegas. Much Much moreso than the DC/MD/VA area and much of the Northeast where I used to bowl.

Concur, there is more oil in the Chicagoland area for me. Most people I see stand on top of the friction and cry and whine it's too dry. When real volume is out, these guys don't even hit the headpin. As for DC/MD/VA I firmly believe they don't use oil there, everyone thinks they hook it more than they really do there.

around me, all the house shots are about the same....38-40 feet 25mls. amf house or not the lane surfaces are pretty old and higher friction. no wood but 15 year old HPLs and even pro anvilanes will produce enough friction for me that all i need is a vibe. and a 10 year old one at that. at one non amf house im at on pro anvilanes im using a cheery vibe and my blue vibe and grape vibe are too strong forcing me almost to 4th arrow on fresh. my stats are about 18.5mph off hand and 395rpms

Two things are at play.  First, as stated above 15 year old synthetic surfaces are much more worn in the middle than is apparent.  This is exacerbated by heavy use of particle equipment for several years after many of these lanes went in.  Another factor is high rev rates that allow many bowlers to move in immediately and blow up the middles.  Also the fact that many speed dominant players use too much surface trying to get the ball to hit also blows up the heads quickly

Bottom line, unless you are speed dominant you are often forced to start closer to 15 board, even on a 10 to 10 THS.  The fact that many house shots are actually too wet dry at the oil line doesn't help either.

A heavy crown ( 6-1 ) would reward more styles than the 15-1 you see on a lot of house shots.

I wondered the same.    They are bone dry here in NYC.  However i threw a few ball ball down in Naples, Florida and there was alot of oil.   I havent seen it in league like that in 10 years.

At least we have that going for us.

we have a good amount of oil at our house i bowl in but with my a little above avg rev rate i cant throw anything with any surface it burns up to fast. i have to polish almost everything only thing with surface that retains energy for me is my sinister at 2000 and i still have to throw on a flood and constantly have to worry about leaving 8 and 9 pins because the angularity of the ball. for the most part i lean toward entry level balls and i drill everything basic or weak so i can use higher end equipment.

I had no idea that different regions of the US tended toward different quantities of oil. I assumed most tended toward less oil due to the cost

I don't think cost has anything to do with it.  Difference between low and high volume of oil is pennies per lane at most.  It is really hard to tell about how much oil is out there.  Not accusing anyone on this thread, but a lot of guys who complain about dry lanes get nose bleeds at the thought of moving to 3rd arrow.  Most house shots are bone dry outside of 8-10 board.  I bowl on a really hooking condition, but there is plenty of oil volume.  Even on this condition there is plenty of oil for my low ball speed to find hold at 4th arrow as I have to move in.

Also, ball manufacturers are in an overkill mode with hook monster shells.
