Do you hate this question?
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:44:42 PM »
How many honor scores do you have?  We picked up a guy as a sub tonight.  He asked me this question, to which I replied "a couple".  Does it really matter?  I wonder, would he think less of me as a bowler if I had none?

If the question is among friends, then thats fine, but from someone you don't know, what is the purpose?

Basically I think it was just uneasiness about the team member's "level". Even though I think that a honor score or a couple of them is just words. Sure, it proves some achievements, but... so what? I guess it is less about thinking about you as a bowler, but rather about himself.

It's only purpose can be to put you in perspective within the tiny cubicles in which he places everyone in his equally tiny brain.

A few people have asked me that and everyone of them have eventually revealed themselves to be people I'd rather not associate with, to put it politely.

I think it's rude to ask such a question until you get to know them and then, like you said, it's only a matter of mere interest. It's as if he just told you, "I need to evaluate you before I'll bowl with you, to see if you're good enough." If he wants to know what kind of bowler you are, he need only watch for a game or two over 2 or 3 occasions. If he can't tell by then, then he's clueless anyway.

Sigh ...

I get the question frequently.  If a person is going to think less of me because I've only sanctioned 1 honor score (299), then I'll kindly remind them that I also cashed in my first 2 PBA events as an amateur and currently hold a PBA card.

Honor scores do not a good bowler make.  Anyone is bound to get lucky and hit 12 in a row in the same game, especially considering the patterns and balls currently used.  "Then why haven't you done it," I might hear.  Don't know.  I hit 14 in a row just a couple of weeks ago.  Back 9, front 5 before leaving a stone 9.  Had 9 in a row first week of league before a solid 7 reared up.  I'm always close.

But again, it's not the number of rings I own that make me a good bowler.  It's being able to bowl well on whatever you put in front of me - house shot, league shot, PBA shot or sport conditions - that make me an accomplished bowler.

300 rings don't impress me.  PBA 300 rings and Sport 300 rings do impress me - a lot!

Please allow me to take the Devil's Advocate role on this one.....

Was this sub not as talented as the next guy?  Maybe that question was just a probe of his own uneasiness and maybe he felt as if he were "swimming with the big fishes" and potentially out of his league.

Just a thought...........lemme know if I am wrong.

The question I have is "was he being a jerk about it or just making coversation?" If it was a d*ck-waving contest then I do hate being asked that question. However, the only thing I really hate is when bowlers come off the lane looking for a five after a frame, like they expect it. I'll offer, but don't come begging.

They could simply think you are good enough to have one or more.

The sad part of the question is not if you have an honor score it's how many do you have.

I’ll generally say I have had a few and leave it at that.

Depending on the person then I may try to explain why honor scores are not a great indicator of how good a bowler someone is, nor is average necessarily a good indicator or skill as well.

I dont ask people that, ability isnt gaged by honor scores. Ability is being able to score on any condition at any time.

I've never really had anyone ask my that question. However I have had people assume that I've thrown a 300 in which I haven't.

A sub concerned about scores and easy conditions?  Maybe you met 302efi.    He probably wanted to make sure the house was easy enough for him before he embarrassed himself.

What's funny is that there's no relationship to how many honor scores a person has and whether they're the type of person you actually want to bowl with.

Just looking back at the way Andrew phrased what happened. I wonder when the the sub actually asked the question. I thought he asked it before anythign happened; in which case, what I said applies.

However .... if he asked it after watching Andrew, a VERY GOOD bowler, throw a few frames, that question could have been meant more in the terms of,
"Wow, you have a great style and really look like you know what you're doing. HOW MANY honor scores have you thrown?" (With the unsaid portion being, "I bet it's a lot.")

You always have to look at both sides of the coin.

You are correct, I shot 238 the first game.  Proceed to back that up with a stellar 159 performance, the go front 4, 9/, to the tenth.  The question came in the 7th frame.  I looked up this guy on bowl.com, he has no honor scores since they started tracking at bowl.com.  I didn't expect any to be honest, the guy didn't avg 160 for the night.

After my response of "a couple", he said if they were in league.
