The Rule of "Thumb"? The Thumb Rules!
« on: October 16, 2006, 01:42:28 AM »
The swelling and shrinking of the thumb. Every bowler knows that a consistent and clean Thumb release is essential for a good release and excellent control.  Just wondering if others have noticed any sort of pattern to the size of the thumb throughout the day and into the night.  The things I've noticed, that seem to be a pattern in the size of the thumb.

Certain generalizations,
1. Early in the morning, just after waking - larger thumb (as we age, more swelling?) Take tape out of ball.
2. Mid morning to early in the afternoon  - an average size thumb
3. 5-6 pm - thumb reduced in size. Add one piece of tape.
4. 8-9 pm - thumb either gets smaller (add 1-2 pieces of tape) or begins to swell with more use (take 1-2 pieces of tape out).

Other factors...
What we eat, what we drink, the Weather Cold/Hot, extreme amounts of bowling, NO bowling, and well being (ie nervous, stressed, relaxed).

I ask the group, what generalizations have you noticed?

What adjustments do you make to account for this sizing problem.
Tape in back of thumbhole, Fitting tape, Switch Grip Adjustable Thumb Insert, Chapstick trick, Grip Insert in front side of thumbhole, hankercheif trick, magic carpet, etc.

You just described a typical day for me.  Finally switched to Magic Carpet.  At the most I may have to install a piece of black in the front.

I just recognize that my thumb swells during summer time due to humidity. Oddly, I have few problems with thumb size changes and do not need tape at all - but I have rather thin and slender fingers, so this might not be typical? I am surprised myself.
I just use tape in the back of some thumb holes to adjust the hole fitting to a snug feeling, but only 1 or 2 tapes at best. But so far, I haven't been in need to use/change tape during play.

My thumb goes up and down from around 55/64 to 15/16 in just a matter of weeks. It is absolutely ridiculous how much my thumb changes from week to week (I tend to fluctuate in weight a lot as well which matters, I'm always skinny but i go from about 130-140 pretty quickly and then back down again). Because of this, it makes it impossible for me to just use tape to adjust, and if I did use tape, I would use a wad in each ball and then have to change it.

Instead of doing that, I just use griploc. I can't imagine bowling without it, although it is a very situational thing for me that I wouldn't recommend for everyone, since my situation is so weird (and to top it off, I am very very picky about the feel of my thumbhole).

SR....you use black tape in front?

That is different.
Does that explain that buttery release?

For me, it's all about coffee. No matter the weather, I only eat once a day, so food is out as a problem, but for me....coffee. I have to stop the intake 2-3 hours before bowling and can't drink any until the last game. By then, the intake does not effect the thumb. Took me 2 years to figure this out and now I have a mental time table as to coffee intake. If I follow it, the thumb has no problem.

The only real problem with this, I hate to be without a cup of coffee...anytime..hot or cold.

I dont use any tape atm. If my thumb has swelled i use som plastic to make my thumb smaller. If i has shrinken a little i blow air in the hole to get a better grip.

You should also throw travel into the mix.  Depending on where I'm bowling I might be bigger than normal even at a typically "small" time of the day.
