Do you let your opponent bowl first?
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:29:59 PM »
This could be any game, regualr league night, position night, or tournament.

It's the tenth frame and it comes down to the final bowlers on each team.

Do you?....

a. Insist that your opponent bowl first

b. Set up quickly because you prefer to bowl ahead of him

c. It doesn't matter to you one way or another. You bowl when its your turn.

For me its c., however I have run into many guys over the years that refuse to bowl first. My team might be on bowler 2 (5 man league) and the last guy on the other team will wait until the last guy on our team is done bowling.

Of course when the game has already been decided they will bowl.

It would be interesting two guys like this, and both of them refusing to bowl first. I am sure someone has seen this happen.

My answer is it depends on the situation.  The real answer for me is C.  I don't care.

If I think the other person cares and it's a competitive environment, I may play head games, but honestly most of the teams in my leagues are just there for fun.  They are going to do what they are going to do regardless.  They don't even know they should feel pressure.  I don't mess around with the really recreational bowlers at all.  I want them to enjoy their experience and some guy giving them a hard time isn't going to enhance that feeling.  I try to help them.  I give them encouragement.  Sometimes I even give them a bowling ball I don't use anymore so they can stop using their 30 year old ball.  Unless you're in a really competitive league, I don't see the value of even thinking about playing head games with people.
Hit the pocket and hope for the best

I always use lane courtesy but outside of that, it doesn't matter to me whether I go first or last in such situations.

I always let the other bowler go first. I also give 2 lanes as a courtesy or at least I try too. If I run into a situation that the other bowler wont bowl, then I wont fight it I will bowl -- BUT -- I will take my time and may even take a little longer than usual just so I don't rush, because I am going first, and he can wait!

For me, it's C.  It doesn't matter to me if I go first or last in these situations.

Now, there are those times (and every league has them), where there is the bowler who thinks they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Yes, the really cocky or arrogant ones.  In that case, I like to go first, so I can apply pressure (usually they will choke as luv2bowl12xs mentioned).

However, if I'm good friends with the bowler (which 95% of us in our league get along well and respect each other), it doesn't matter the order.  In fact, I will encourage the other bowler (and vice versa) and show good sportsmanship.  Even though we are a competitive league, there still is the respect for the game that we all enjoy.
