Do you need video hosting?
« on: February 19, 2005, 04:38:53 PM »
I have a ton of bandwidth (2 terabytes to be exact) and a dedicated webs erver. I can probably host some video's for the BR crew.  I can make a generic FTP login and you can upload your video's but JUST bowling videos...lol.  Dont want the fed's at my door cause you decide to host a divx rip of an Oscar screener..lol.

I can also host websites.  I have a CPANEL installed server.  Hit me up if ya guys may dig it so you have a bit more 'long term' hosting instead of something that stops ya after a few days/weeks.

2 terabytes of bandwidth.
Don't you mean space?
There is no connection that has 2 TB of bandwidth.
The fastest on the planet is OC12 which is the backbone in Europe it is if I remember correctly 3.5 GB/sec.

As far as a place to post videos I have already built an extensive sitefor hosting videos where you can watch online, upload, or download, but everyone uses other places for some reason.

Maybe just a matter of people not remembering.

I would use caution setting up what would basically be an anon ftp I did that a few years ago and it cost me dearly.

It'd be anon but I'd monitor it daily and if it got nailed I'd just take it offline cause its not a standard 'anonymous' 'anonymous' style FTP it would be a BR specific login/pass and if it got abused it'd be gone.

And by 'bandwidth' I mean per month.  I have 2 terabytes of monthly bandwidth available to me (2000gigs roughly).  The actual server is located in a San Antonio data center which is connected to, I believe, 2 OC12 lines.

And I believe actually the fastest connection is an OC192 which is 9.6Gbps.

Possibly haven't been following it for about a year or so now.

My host is ServerBeach which is owned by PEER1 NETWORK which is a backbone provider, I do believe.

I have an 80gig primary drive in it and then a blank drive I haven't used.  The server is dedicated for webhosting, Linux based, etc.

Yeah I haven't paid attention for a LONG time.  THe only reason I know that there's faster than OC12 is because when I was a game admin for Homelan I knew they hosted their game servers (over 100) from an OC48 line.

Can't wait for Fiber Optics to get into full swing.
Standard phone line/copper twisted pair 24 lines, fiber optic 1000 lines.
82 1/3 times more bandwidth per pair.

I may be wrong on this... but I think the problem with 'fully fiber areas' is that conventional DSL wont work with it.  At least I believe thats what it was.  I remember having a training session on the ins/outs of DSL when it was 'new' at HP (did tech work for them for a while) but I honestly never really paid to much attention to it.

If I am correct then getting a lot of landline based providers to switch to fiber only would be hard since a TON of them offer DSL based services on their systems.

I'd have to research it more.

I believe you are correct that with current protocols fiber is useless but just think of the possibilities. I know there are a few companies that are working in fiber optic based data tranfer in a PC. If the PC is in development you know that web protocols are too.

Then there's also the new 'power line internet' theyve been working on thats faster than conventional CABLE/DSL and uses already existing powerlines.  Thats really cool too.  I'm hoping to see more info on that cause it'd let places with crappy phones lines, or people ina partments, get full access to the net at highspeed without the local DSL/CABLE provider hassles.

I have a similar setup.  My server is with The Planet in Dallas. I get 2000 GB of transfer per month too.  I dual 120 GB harddrives, with dual Xeon procs, a gig of Ram, off-server backup NAS, yada yada.

2000 Gigs of transfer is a ton.  Only porn sites really use that.

I host a handful of websites on it. Just my clients, like Dyno-thane and Turbo Grips.
