FOULING IN THE CLUTCH....
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:13:35 AM »
Last night during this quarter's league roll off, we needed 14 points to win this quarter. I bowled a miserable 148 the second game, after bowling a respectable 219 the first game.

My opponent, a 225 avg bowler, needed two strikes + 4 pins in the tenth to beat me. Yea, he sucked it up too.  The guy gets up and strikes on the first ball. He throws the second ball and to everyone's surprise, the buzzer goes off. Yea, he fouled. It was a crushing strike, as he bowls two handed and kills the pocket when he's on.

His teammates, who have lodged complaints against other bowlers for excessive use of foul language, used more than their share after that ball. I really felt sorry for the guy. But, I was pleased to win the point. Did this guy choke, or was it just bad/buzzard luck? I think it was the pressure to win since I beat him the first game by 20 sticks.

As it turned out, we won 14 points, they won ten. We beat them for the quarter by 1/2 a point.

By the way, I did redeem myself the third game, striking the first seven and then going 9- 9/ XX9 for 258.  Freaking ringing ten pin in the eighth frame, once again destroys my chance for a 300.

Has anyone else choked by fouling when you really needed a point. I never even think about fouling when I need to make a shot.

I did once, back when I was about 19.

It's no accident for the last 15+ years I have programmed myself to stop 2-3 feet back from the line.

I don't understand why people believe they have to be right up on the foul line to bowl well.

I've never fouled in a big situation, but when I tried adding more slide to my game I fouled away a few decent strings.  I since changed back to the old soles and went back to minimal sliding.

how can you even think for a moment that fouling is choking?  The guy threw the strike, you simply got lucky to win.

i did it in state finals, team match play, a strike in the ninth would have given us the lead, but my knee buckled at the line and i went over by a centimeter.  Same thing happened the year before, except it was someone else, and absolutely nobody heard or saw the foul light go off, he struck and it didn't register on the score.  we lost that match by 10 pins...

I have problems with the word choking, but after all the harsh words from the PBA threads regarding choking....this too would be called that.

Fact is that part of making a successful shot is staying behind the line.  If it were not, then there wouldn't be any need for a foul line.

I see it more of a mental breakdown and not paying attention, that's all....but even though he struck, he didn't get the count.

Happens to everyone. Even Big Wes fouled on TV to lose to Liz Johnson.

Sounds like you want it to be a "choke" rather than bad like.  You need the reassurance that you beat him fair and square or what?

With that said if he needed a double in the tenth to beat 148 and he's a 225 average bowler he basically gave it to you in the first place.  He didn't deserve the point if he bowled almost 100 pins below his average for the game.

Nobody else in the house fouled all night. I have not fouled all year. This guy did not foul again all night.

You figure it out.

BTW: I led the guy the entire game. Neither of us shot outstanding. I guess you say I got lucky the first and last games when I beat him too???

I have not lost a point in the last four weeks and we have bowled the best teams in our league. I really need reaaurance. Right. I am in the five in match points. Boy, I'm insecure. I can hold my own with the rest of the house hacks, though I have been bowling only about two years.

Agreed. I stunk the place up and he did the same, maybe worse. However, some nights the pins just don't fall your way.
