Do you prefer a relaxed span or stretched span? Why?
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:13:01 AM »
I was just wondering what everyone prefers. I just shortened by span almost an 1/8th and added switch grip thumbs and the ball has never felt better in my hand. I have no idea why it took me so long to do the interchangeable thumb with as many balls as I drill up.

I like a stretched span... ever since I switched to it my release has seemed to be much more clean... and I can't feel anything on my hand.

In the past several years, I have gone to a shorter span with less reverse pitch, started using the Vise IT interchangeable thumbs, and the Vacu-grip installation on my finger grips.  I also started wearing Vise Hada patch on the back of my thumb. The result? My release is cleaner than ever, and my hand doesn't get torn up and sore even if I bowl a dozen games in one day.

I like the shorter span with away pitches for the fingers and forward for my thumb.  It makes it much easier for me to roll my wrist without dropping the ball.

I also like the Visa Hada (blue) tape on the back of my thumb. IT does make the release alot smoother for me..

I was going to do the IT system but my pro shop guy does not install those. He is a Turbo staff member so I just went with that and so far no problems..

I've used a relaxed finger tip fit for over 30 years now.

The relaxed grip is much easier on the hand.

Allows you to grip the ball with less pressure.

Allows for much more versatility in releases.

The vast majority of the professionals use a relaxed finger tip grip. In the old longer formats where you bowled a lot of games it was a must. With the shorter gualifying formats in many of todays tournaments you can get away with a longer span.

In talking to a couple of drillers in my area, they all say that for the past four or five years, the trend has been for drillers to suggest relaxed spans.  They all agree that most professional bowlers have switched to relaxed spans - it allows bowlers to reduce risk of injuries, less strain on tendons, etc.

I personally went from relaxed to a longer span - I find that I get better release, less hang ups, and better ball reaction with my new stretched span.

I prefer the feel of the longer span. I I get a ball with a relaxed span, I tend to turn the ball early and top it at the release if it is too short.

I was doing exactly that with a longer span. I haven't had that problem at all since I shorted things up.. I guess its all personal preference..

If I did that I would drop the ball in my backswing..

I do know a stretched span is very bad for your overall hand health in the long run. I had a buddy that had a really long span and he used a stretched span and he had to have hand surgery and never bowled again he did so much damage..

Stretched span with pitched away fingers and thumb.  It lets me roll the ball and my fingers don't hurt because I use the away pitches.

Stretched. Short causes me to grip and tense up my forearm.

this was something i had a problem with when my longer span was shortend but it wasn't the shorter span that made me rotate early.  it was the slickness of the slug (getting use to slug feel).  if i ddin't rotate early then i was dropping it... glad i got that problem fixed.

as far as the long or short i am still torn.... never new how much 5/16" would change feel/release.

I just switched from a slightly stretched span with 1/4 reverse in my thumb to a relaxed span and 0 reverse.  Prior to this I was having pain in my hand after bowling.  First time out with the new span I threw 6 games and had no pain afterwords.  With the longer span I was coming around the side of the ball in order to get my thumb to clear.  For me, the shorter span seems to allow me to stay under the ball better.  The ball even feels lighter in my hand, which to me tells me it fits better than the previous layout.  I'm about to make one more change and go from 1/8 under palm to 1/8 away due to having a callous build up on the side of my thumb next to my index finger.
