Do you prefer a relaxed span or stretched span? Why?
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:13:01 AM »
I was just wondering what everyone prefers. I just shortened by span almost an 1/8th and added switch grip thumbs and the ball has never felt better in my hand. I have no idea why it took me so long to do the interchangeable thumb with as many balls as I drill up.

Relaxed as well.

1/2" reverse, 1/4" away for the thumb

no finger inserts

relaxed with forward pitch and left in a tight thumbhole....

the relaxed span puts less pressure on my tendons and ligaments

the forward pitch and tight thumbhole prevent me from having to grip the ball

I do know a stretched span is very bad for your overall hand health in the long run. I had a buddy that had a really long span and he used a stretched span and he had to have hand surgery and never bowled again he did so much damage..

Was that Mickey, Jim?

Also......how can you shorten up your span anymore????  I mean....3 inch span is already short!!

Seriously though, I had a long span...coupled with an offset grip.  Ring to thumb was 5 7/8 I believe....and it was stretched.  Mind you....I can palm a ball but still.  Best move I made was to shorten that up close to a 1/2 inch!!  Jim is right.....benefits are much better.....my hand doesn't hurt like it used to!!

Relaxed? Stretched? LOL.

I''m going to make the only common sense answer so far.

I prefer a ball that fits my hand.

Thumb pitch is based on skin texture, thumb length and span.
Finger pitch is based on flexibility.
Sizes of grips and slugs is based on sizes of fingers and thumb.
Oval angle on thumb is based on the widest part of the thumb.
Span is based on the middle of the joint being in the middle of the finger hole.

Never had to use any rubbish on my thumb, fingers, wrist, or anything else associated with a poor ball fit. Never had to waste money on interchangable anything. Just simply a roll of 1inch white tape once in a blue moon for swelling/shrinking depending on the weather.

I must be doing something wrong, it surely can''t be that easy can it?

You must be blessed with an absolutely perfect hand if you never have to deal with your fingers and thumb changing sizes, or feeling different thanks to changes in humidity and temperature. I have to change my thumb tape once or twice a set at a minimum because my hand won't stay the same for five minutes. And if I have to change balls, thank God for the interchangeable thumb! (No wonder so many pros are starting to use them)

And FYI, a ball CAN "fit your hand" in more than one way. You make it sound like it's the most simple science in the world. Bullcrap. If that's the case, why do even the best bowlers in the world and best ball drillers experiment with different spans and pitches?

Thank you Dan, I could not agree with you more..

There is no such thing as a "perfect fit" at least not for me..

MY hands swell and go down all the time..

I am always working on my fit. Especially when you wake up in the morning and your hand is swelled or you bowl many, many games your fit changes. More tape in or more tape out and adjusting the position to get your "feel" that you desire.

Doesn't it affect revs/loft?
Relaxed seems to just add room for error at release, for me.
