Do you tip your pro shop operator?
« on: February 18, 2010, 01:17:01 AM »
I have been tipping my pro shop guy for the last 4-5 year's for all kind's of ball work done. I normally don't tip for thing's like new shoe's, bag's, cleaner's, towel's, ect.

Last night I was talking to a few guy's who just picked up a new ball last night, 2 Invasion's and a Mission. I don't remember how we got to this topic but all I can remember is me asking these guy's if they gave the man a tip. All 3 said "No, I already paid $250+ for this new beast. Why would I tip the man?!" Not in their actual word's but the general idea. 1 guy said he will never tip any proshop because of the money he already make's. 2nd guy said he just don't feel it's needed. 3rd guy said he's never really thought about it but probably wouldn't tip anyway.

You tip your waiter/waitress, you tip your barber guy/gal, you tip your pizza delivery dude, why would you not tip your pro shop guy?

I tip him because I know he don't make a lot off each ball sale or anything else for that matter. On a typical new ball sale he generally make's $25-$30 at most. Most of his money come's in the form of ball plug and redrilling. I normally tip $5 unless he's getting me 2 ball's done in the same day then it's $10.

I bowl with my proshop owner so I dont tip him but, I do get a lot of people to come in to buy product for him.  Over the last 2 nights I have personally sold 8 EBO Missions for him.  He had to place another order today for them.  783 and 761 with 3 279s will do that for a ball.

Pchee was right, bowlers are "CHEEP"!

Prior running my own shop, I tipped the proshop guy occasionally.  If he made me a good deal on a highend ball, sure I'd toss a 5 or 10 his direction.  He/she is providing you with a service, no different than a waiter, barber, etc.  If you feel he/she went above the average service, you should tip them.  You guys will tip a waiter for bring you a drink and writing your order down correctly, but won't tip a guy that drills you a bowling ball that could POTENTIALLY win you alittle cash?

I've received two tips in the past 3 months.  One was for opening up a thumb hole and sanding a ball for a guy at no charge, he laid 3 bucks on the counter, said thanks and left.

The other was for a guy I plugged and redrilled 4 balls and 2 blank drills.  We discussed layouts and setting up an arsenal to combat the conditions he sees.  He tossed me a $10 bill for the help.

I tip my pro shop guy for cleaning my stuff and other quick things that he doesn't charge me for.  I also do a keep the change thing.  So if he charges me $145 and I give him $150 he gets the difference.  I know it isn't much, but I guess it shows that I appreciate what he does for me.

That has to be one of the most inane analogies I've read in a while...

It is not inane if the pro shop guy/driller is not the owner of the shop. Mine is and many are, but there are many shops with employees. As such, tipping is probably welcome.

No, that was Kelly Kulick, Mike Fagan, and Scroggy for making the shows with the Missions in hand when they bowled.  Without those performances, the Mission MIGHT not have been the insane hit it is right now.  You just reinforced what they were thinking already

I got tips once in a while.  I would decline at first, but always take it if they insisted.  Sometimes they'd buy me a drink if I stayed past closing to finish up their ball.  I would much rather get good word of mouth to their friends than any tip.  At no point did I ever expect a tip and wouldn't think less of anyone not offering one, regardless of how much effort I put into serving them.

I don't tip Tim, but if or when I throw ring scores I shake his hand as a thank you for putting a drill on a ball that allowed me to throw the score.
Just an appreciative job well done.

Back when I worked for a corporate owned center that actually owned the shop we used to get tips in the pro shop. They actually ended up firing all of us for receiving tips, but apparently it was okay for the waiters and waitresses to receive tips, go figure. I would of assumed doing ball work took more skill than being able to walk and carry food at the same time.

I don't give my pro shop guy tips.  However, I do send business his way and recommend him to people.  I also try to help him out when I'm in the shop.  If I'm in the shop waiting on something to be done and a customer comes in and is looking for a new ball, for example, I'll try to help that customer pick out a ball and explain some of the basics of ball reaction and why it'd be a good choice for what he wants, etc.  (And yes, my ball driller is perfectly okay with me doing this since I'm knowledgable, personable, etc.)  It makes him more money in the long run than if I just slipped him a couple extra bucks when I got a ball drilled.

I work at our local bowling center and can get balls for cost. When I took them to the guy that drilled my stuff, I always tipped him for his time and drilling a ball not purchased from here.

Why would you tip him?  You're already paying for his services directly.

You don't pay your waitress directly.  You pay the restaurant for the food, the restaurant pays your waitress about $2-3 per hour.  She supplements her wages with tips.  It's part of our labor laws, explicitly, regarding minimum wage.  Pizza delivery is included in that.

Most of us tip our barber or hairdresser, but in reality, you aren't supposed to tip the shop owner if they are the one that cuts your hair.  If someone else cuts your hair, they are paid minimum wage or less, supplemented with tips.  They pay a portion of their take to the house, which is where the house makes money.  The shop owner is already taking her entire cut for herself, she's not splitting it with the employee and so you don't tip her.

I don't tip my driller since I pay him directly.  If he had an assistant who he paid and the assistant drilled my equipment, I might.  It hasn't been an option since the guy here works alone.

But the waiter's income is substantially tips.  Your drillers income is not.  It's drilling fees.  Do you tip your doctor?  Do you tip the plumber?  They're providing service.

No, you pay them for the service.  If the service is above average, you continue to give them your patronage and recommend them to others.
