Do we underestimate axis rotation?
« on: February 18, 2010, 06:23:44 AM »
I was watching Brunswick''s C-System 2.5 video on their website today and something caught my eye.  At the end they have throwbot roll the ball with 3 different axis rotations, 60, 40 and 20 degrees.  Same revs and same speed.  What was interesting was the actual appearance to ME of the axis rotations.  60 degrees looked like 40 degrees, 40 like 20, and 20 pretty close to end over end.  In the past I''ve estimated my rotation to be around 60 degrees, but now that I''ve watched this video I''d put it more at 75-80 degrees.

I''m not saying that everyone underestimates their rotation, but I''ve seem some people claim as low as 20-30 degrees.  With the way the ball looked going down the lane at 20 degrees in the video I can say that I''ve seen maybe 1 or 2 people in my life with that kind of rotation on a regular shot.  Sure some guys can kill rotation to go up the boards, but there is no way you''re playing inside of 10 with that kind of rotation.

Here is the video I''m talking about - http://www.brunswickbowling.com/newsLetterStorage/C-System_2-Low_res.wmv the throwbot stuff is at the 5:20 mark if you don''t want to watch the whole thing.
Thoughts?

i used to underestimate the effect of axis rotation on a bowling ball. my game has changed and evolved over the years and it seems my "a" game has about 45 degrees of axis rotation and much more backend reaction as a result.

I thought it was just me till i realized how much my ball was skidding thinking I was at 45 degrees. but then i pictured a bowling ball at 0 and in my mind turned it 45 degrees... now it made more sense that 45 degrees wouldnt seem like much when standing straight behind the ball.

so id agree with you. id imagine that most people think their rotation is much less then what it really is.

I think the reason most underestimate it because they are throwing the ball out to the right. If you play STRAIGHT up the lane THEN you can start to see your rotation accurately, but when you are swinging the lane you think it is more forward roll simply because you are not taking into account the angle you threw it out at.

For example throwing the ball right up 5 with 30 degrees axis rotation will hook into the pocket (in my example)... now this person moves in and throws the same 30 degree axis rotation shot out on the lane at a 30 degree angle (dead straight is 0 degrees, straight into the gutter with no travel down the lane is 90 degrees) then the ball will hook to a point of traveling dead straight down the lane... of course this may not be the case taking into account track flare and axis migration... but in theory.

place some tape on your pap and watch the roll.I have about 45* on my normal release and always thought that was much less then most.I often need a high rg polished pearl to play on the same lanes as others with the sanded hook monsters because of their high axis rotation.

Except for the fact that you never really angle the ball more then about 4 degrees when you throw it.

I've been known to throw a few of those 90 degree shots

My cruel picture says it seems possible to throw the ball out at 30 degree's too but who really cares, lol

As a general statement....yes bowlers underestimate axis rotation.  Over estimate ball speed, over estimate revs and don't know their tilt.

I really notice the difference in how my Invasion hooks when I change the axis tilt.   even my friend who got his invasion, was saying how it didnt seem like it was hooking alot, and i told him to change how he comes outa the ball so thier is more side rotation, and bam the ball hooked.

I'd say my normal axis tilt is about 45degrees
