Does anybody knows this about C_J ?
« on: March 02, 2005, 01:19:29 AM »
I am 23 years old and i have benn playing around the world representing my country since i was a junior ..and i have bowl against a lot of great players: nathan bohr, chirs loschetoer, sean rash, david haynes, derek sapp, kelly kulick, diandra asbasty, shannon buchan, scott norton, etc
How is possible that C_J beeing such a great bowler as he is i have never seein him in the team usa?
he never tried to make it? did he go straight from his THS to the pba tour?
Because i know a lot of bowlers: Chris Barnes,Pat Healey,Rick Stellsmit,Bill Rowe,Mika koivuniemi,Tore Torgessen,Tim Mack,Osku Palermaa,Anders Ohman and even Amleto Monacelli in his time...they decided to go to the tour because the have got beat everybody on international fields and they could measure their skills with the best bowlers in the whole world and playing in a lot of countryes with a different lane conditions and the have won consistently...
How does this Guys Like C_J or DJ Archer know that they were good enough to make it to the tour???
Sory for my pooor english

CJ has been good, I mean, really good for a long time.  He's bowled well at the High Roller as well as many tough tournaments.

Bowling in Dallas gives someone a chance to show just how good they are.  When you get to shoe up against guys like Dino Castillo, Barnes, Fleming, Big Wes, Scroggs (both of them), Ballard (both of them)...and a ton of other great bowlers down there, you know if you are good enough.

I'm not really sure if CJ ever tried out for Team USA.  I'm sure he would have made it if he had tried out.

CJ has game and a great head on his shoulders to handle the pressure of the tour.

The thing is... there are several other very talented bowlers in Texas that don't care about the PBA or Team USA who compete (and beat) with these same guys regularly.

CJ has always been good. But he is not the only amazing talent in these parts.

Jonah, the best way to explain it is sometimes you just know.  Along with CJ and Archer, Fagan is another guy that never went out of Team USA but is competitive week in and week out.  Some people don't have an interest in representing thier country.  After you bowl the Mega bucks, and ABC for a few years and at 20, you're making more than people twice your age who have "good jobs" you get an idea of how good you can be.  DJ Archer won the ABC the year before he went pro, I believe All Events, CJ missed getting the Eagle by just a few sticks the last time he bowled.

It's all about motivation.  Some guys are motivated by being part of Team USA, there are a few guys that could be competive in the PBA but have no interest in joining the tour.  Other guys are motivated by being part of the PBA.  And some other really good bowlers don't care about either.

CJ was beating the good sandbaggers in handicap tournaments.  Yeah, he was spotting 30 pins a game these cheaters and still whipping them.  Then, as said earlier, he was bowling heads up against some of the greats of the game in Texas and beating them too.  After these greats repeatedly tell you that you are good enough for the PBA, then he had to try.  Mad Skillz!

I’m not sure if this was CJ’s case but in my opinion to bowl for team USA you can’t be working for a living.

Unless you had a very generous employer you would be gone from the job for too long during a year.

I know of a bowler who lost a good job because he was going to an international event and the employer told them if they left they were fired.

Some bowlers simply choose to work a job and hone their skills in local events.

Fagan and Archer were both collegiate all-americans before they went into the pros and were winning megabucks tournaments as college players.  IMO there's nothing that can gear up your game for the next level(high rollers and regionals) like College Bowling.  Bill O'Neill just got his PBA card so expect to see his name alot in the next few weeks on the PBA.  3 Time College player of the year, won the True Amatuer Challenge.  I'm not sure if Chris Johnson bowled collegiately or not, but you can't rule out the fact that he's an awesome competitor.

As others have noted, Texas has, for many years, been blessed with a ton of talent at all levels of the game.  Even in the late 80's, there was a center I bowled in that on any given week, if they missed the national cut, you stood a pretty good chance of shoeing up against David Ozio, Mark Williams or Wayne Webb in the Thursday scratch trio (this was during a period where they were tearing it up pretty good to).

Lots of action bowling, especially in Houston and Dallas, with competition including people that could make more in action in Texas than they could on tour.  When you get that kind of practice competition and you factor in tremendous skills, it is easy to see how someone could bypass TeamUSA and even forego a lengthy background in regionals.  The organized big money (I know I'm the only one that remembers Smurf getting screwed out of $50K at the event over at Stadium) may be mostly gone but the talent is still immense in the SW.

Jonah,

It's CJ. A little of my background for you. I moved up out of juniors when I was 17 and started bowling every scratch event in the Soutwest. I did the TEAM USA thing when I was younger. I believe I am still the youngest to advance to the National TEAM USA finals way back in I want to say 92 in San Diego. I won the Texas state championship against all the adults that year. I also tried out the next year but got 4th and they only took the top 3 to nationals.

I wanted to go to Wichita State like every other kid wanted to but then I started going with this girl the day after I graduated for 3 years and just went to community college in Dallas instead. I would bowl in leagues on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday form when I was 18-23. I would never miss a night of bowling leagues because back then your league dues were 20 a night but your bracket fees were 400 a night. Very good money. I got started right against the big boys pot bowling about 2 months after I moved up. My first action match was against Chris Warren and I won about 1400 that night. 18 years old and won 1400. That was only the beginning. When I was still 18 I won a texas track tournament for 10,000. Why would I want to go bowl in college when I could go to school here and bowl league and action and go all over the southwest for tournaments on the weekend and still maintain a girlfriend and hang out with my friends? I was staying in Dallas.

I got a job back when I was 21. Actually a really good job that I had for many years so the TEAM USA thing didn't appeal to me for work reasons. When I was 24-25 I was down to 2 leagues a week then. I still as of present day bowl in two leagues in Dallas. I bowl mondays at Jupiter lanes and Thursdays at Don Carter West. I still pay the full year of dues and just have some friends bowl for me while I am gone. To me I will always be the local league bowler guy and still be friends with all my friends back home and always keep my head about things. Those are the people who always supported me and I will never forget that. I also bowled high rollers and such all the time and made very good money out there also. Jonah, when the tour said this is your last year to bowl on tour I knew it was for me. I have always had a fire in me to bowl and I always will. I knew I could make it out here but no matter how natural your talents are it is totally different out here and I am taking my beatings like a man out here to gain experience. I will one day be a PBA champion but I have to pay my dues like everybody else. Hope this info helps you Jonah and sums up the money back home all those years just made me stay in the Southwest for all those years until now. CJ

Wow, that's honestly one of the best bios I've ever read.  Amazing success story about how a fierce competitive drive can take you anywhere you want to go.
