Why can't they be .pdf?

I had the same problem opening .pdf files. I had Adobe etc but they still wouldnt open. Even had a comp engineer have a look for me.
I had to download another browser to get them to work.
I got Mozilla Firefox from download.com. Its free and now I can open any .pdf.
I still use internet explorer but if its .pdf then I start it up with Mozilla
