Title: Does anyone think they could benefit from improved FOCUS?
Post by: bamaster on May 25, 2004, 02:15:41 AM
With all the talk about Q-Links and whatnot, I thought the reeeeal issue is more about FOCUS when bowling.  Some people simply "go through the motions" without executing the things they've been working on.... like me!

So, who here needs more FOCUS?

Me, too.
Fellow bowlers are often treated to the sight of a pteradactyl sized item flapping its wings to get out of the bowling center. It's always MY concentration leaving the building.

When I focus, I bowl well.  Unfortunately, I only focus about 10% of the time.

I remember a time when my focus was so clear I could "see" every shot before I threw it.  Sort of that Jack Nicklaus thing.

Now there is so much going on outside of bowling in my life that I'm lucky if I remember any shots I've thrown the last three years.

Funny thing, I remember them in detail during that "Focus" period!

Yeah, as with many people I could definitely use some improved focus. My mental game is fairly strange anyway.
For instance, you could ask me to throw two identical brand bowling balls drilled identically, but with different color grips. I'll easily average 20 pins higher with the ball with the better looking grips than with the other one, even though they are identical balls that react the same. Basically, if I like the way the ball looks going down the lane, I'll bowl better with it.
Somehow I doubt that guys like Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams give a rat's *** about how their ball looks!

I go through periods where sometimes I need to concentrate more on my bowling before and after each shot, and other times I go through periods where I want to think about anything BUT bowling between shots.

I must have adult ADD syndrome. Yeah, that's it...

Focus? On a THS that can be harder than you think. So far after two weeks in my summer league, my lowest game has been game two, when my parents and friends decide to come visit and watch my daughter, father in law and I bowl...

I need to put more concentration on a better game two as so far I have thrown:

Week 1: 252-215-226=693
Week 2: 221-161-233=615

Focus is what I am looking for also, at least
during leagues. I am much more focussed (sp)
at a tourney or for instance my summer scratch league.
I easily can watch my ball traveling on the lane and can see
a minute difference in any ball thrown. If I LOSE MY focus
I will start to spray the lanes using 4 boards instead of my normal
2. If I had this FOCUS in fall league I would be averaging
about 220. I bowl in the fall with a group that is not
serious about the game, if I could come up with a team
that had fun but was still serious I would love the fall
instead of the summer.

I think I'll try a notepad tonight. My main weakness is maintaining my focus all the way through a shot. I hit my mark pretty consistently, but I have a real problem watching my shot through the breakpoint. That kills me in transition. I see the ball go over my mark.....mental break.......and then I see it roll into the pocket. I'm especially going to need to overcome this to excel in this Summer's sport league.

Any suggestions on how to format this notebook? I have some vague ideas, but it would be nice to have a firm plan on how to organize my data.

What kind of things specifically would you note? I'm thinking; foot position, mark, breakpoint, and backend reaction. Those would be initial notes, then it would be a matter of noting changes and adjustments.

I think I could definitely use a lot more what was this about?  My focus is terrible because I think I over analyse everything.  I think if I just got up there and got a few simple things and focused on them I would be fine, but instead I try to do too much and it becomes a jumbled mess.

My focus is just fine, thank you.  It's my lack of talent that's killing me.

When I was taking my fat burning suplements (thermogenics) the one ingredient that really improved my focus was Ephedrine HCl.  No, it is not the ephedrine but a cleaner version of it.  Sure it gives you energy, but more importantly it seems to really clear your head.

I use it now (25 mg) before I work out.  Gives me the energy and seriously clears my head.

Kendog, I keep track of the first three items, the last one depends on the ball I am using.  I also track the lane numbers (historically in our house certain lanes play deeper than others), The oil pattern if I know it, which ball, which release and the finger dancing (from Ron's tips) number.  Most of that info is like what Sawbones said to use it for, to remind myself of what I am trying to do on each lane just before my turn to bowl.  I also track where each shot ended up, what pins were left and which I missed, and any errors (slowed down, pulled, etc) so that I can make corrections, or at least, try to.
