Why Do Bowlers Do This?
« on: April 08, 2008, 04:38:44 AM »
Why do bowlers buy a really strong ball and then put a weak drilling on it? Seems to me they should just buy a weaker ball, maybe one that is more suited for the reaction they are looking for? Not only that, the weaker ball might just cost less money also.

I guess they want the latest hook monster but are concerned that they will not be able to control it. Or ??????

I like to take away the early flare by putting the pin weak on some balls.  The cover is still strong and it will hook, but it's less likely to burn up the heads on a shot (even an oily one).

Many "bowlers" are knowledgeable enough to truly understand ball reaction and drillings. Other factors like shelf appeal, seeing a pro on TV, or just wanting the next big thing come into play. Others do it strictly for control because they know what works for them.

Well for me, I usually do this with most strong balls because with my revs the ball will be dead at 20ft on a house shot...but with with a weak drill and some polish, I can keep the ball in play.

You do have a point...

We could get cheaper bowls but we wouldnt get the attention we do with the expensive balls.  Also forgot about the fan club of people watching to see what the new ball does....

You become the talk of the lane until some other people get the ball and say its trash...

That is how it always happens

For my house, my least expensive balls work the best (Blue and Cherry Vibes), but I have stronger for the unknown houses and tournaments. My Black Widow and SR300 were great in Reno. Too bad the operator wasn't...

Based off my experiences here, but also based off what I've heard the pros talk about in those videos about PBA Experience leagues and what equipment they suggest.  Let's say I'm facing a wet/dry shot.  A strong drill on a strong ball might have a tendancy to want to grab the dry too hard and give me a little bit of an over/under and make the ball want to read too early to carry.  Throwing a weaker drill on the strong ball will give me more control off the spot, but the strong core and cover will help the ball downlane.  Conversely, taking a weak ball and drilling it strong will give me the hook that I need, but its reaction characteristics might not suit my game.  Since I have a lower rev rate but a good amount of speed, I need some help from a strong, lower RG core to get the ball to rev up in the midlane and turn the corner.  Even with the weak drill, the strong core is still going to give me that help.  However, if I take a weaker ball and throw a strong drill on it, it may not have enough motor to give me the reaction I need to get a strong entry angle.  That's why my Special Agent is my go-to ball.  Even with that super low RG core and strong cover, I can get good length and control thanks to a 5 1/4" pin to PAP distance, but I still get excellent recovery and a VERY hard continuation on the backend.

I need to learn more about pin placement and Etc. Where could I read up on topics like that? I know some stuff but I would like to know a lot more.

Thanks
