Does color matter to you?
« on: March 10, 2009, 02:34:38 PM »
No, you racists!

Anyways.. Does the color of your bowling ball effect your perception of how good it is? In my opinion, it's a definite yes. If I don't like how it looks going down the lane, I can't bowl with it. That might sound a bit snotty, but, I could give less of a half of a Twix.

Does not matter to me as I have a Copperhead
being delivered today. As I see it, that
might be the ugliest ball I have ever owned.

Color does not matter to me it is all about the performance.  AS far as grips are concerned I always use white and a white thumb insert so I can see that going down the lane.  Lets me see if I spun it or missed hitting it.

I remember way back (early ballreviews.com days) the discussion about different colors of the same coverstock having different "characteristics." Maybe someone remembers this too. Now, this would only be valid if the covers were the same only the color choice was different. Did anyone remember that?

The answer would be No up until the Copperhead. I have a hard time looking at that ball. White just doesn't belong on a bowling ball.

For the most part no, I'm looking for performance.

There have been some ugly balls over the years that I can remember.

The white-bone AMF XS was one ugly ball after being used. So was the AMF Gold (Baby poop yellow) angle. And the Coral (Orange) Columbia Piranha.

But all those balls were stronger than I would have used at that time so they were not much of a temptation.

Obviously I'm not too concerned about colors or appearance if I was willing to throw this.

I don't care about how the colors look going down the lane.  I have two different colored Vise interchangeable thumb slugs, the tighter slug is yellow, the looser one is black.  Obviously I can see the yellow thumb rotating very easily, and I can't see the black one at all.  And I don't care.  I don't pay attention to that at all.

I have a few people telling me to get a Virtual Gravity---Im having a tough time because I HATE balls with that much color difference. Just drives me nuts to watch them. I guess if they are striking, who cares???

Color is irrelevant as long as all 10 are falling.  I've never understood this love affair with a certain color bowling ball - as if it makes an ounce of difference in the performance of said bowling ball.

If color affects the way you bowl, then you've not been bowling long enough.  After 21 years in this game, my release is no longer dependent upon what color ball is in my hand.  I, not the ball I am throwing, control the release, axis tilt, rev rate, and trajectory of every shot.

It never has mattered to me. Some of the really ugly ones to others are some of the ones I have liked best. Maybe it is just a weird appeal for something different. (Or maybe I just secretly want to piss others off lol).

Some of the ugly ones I have had
AMF Bone XS
Hammer Viscious Particle Pearl
Gold Rhino - yes, mine was but ugly
Total Shock and Awe
Orange Piranha
Ohh and two others whose names escape me both were red - 1 was Brunswick and the other Ebonite (I want to say R2, maybe one of the original urethane balls)

As long as the ball works it doesn't matter.

Well I guess did buy one ball for looks (The Golden Globe).

I thought the color of my MoRich Minotaur was pretty disgusting some years ago.  It was that ball that I shot my first honor score and highest series with.  I swore then I'd never complain about that ugly lavender color ever again - or the color of any ball for that matter.

Well, yeah, you have a point.

But say you have a solid color ball, and a multi-obnoxious-colored ball. I would take many colors over one. Just so I can "see" that I threw my shot the same. Unless I have a bunch of computers telling me numbers, there really isn't THAT clear of an indicator that you threw your shot virtually the same. I really like to be able to tell how it looks. It doesn't really matter when buying a ball, because I'll usually put in weird lookin' grips and slugs, but in the end, it does help me.

Only for my spare ball.  A Columbia staffer told us a few years ago that light- single-colored spare balls will go straighter because the darker and multi-colored pigments tend to soften the coverstock slightly.  We experimented with this theory and found it to be somewhat accurate.  While any color new polyester would go perfectly straight when thrown correctly, as they got a few games and marks on them, the lighter-colored ones tended to stay more true to the straight line.

The guy said if he had his way, all of their polyester balls would be as light as possible, but that the White Dots are there to please the casual bowlers who like the pretty swirls of colors.

I laughed at the time, but realized the value of his information later.
