Back ends
« on: June 24, 2005, 03:18:03 AM »
There must be a basic flaw in my game.  Everyone always talks about how much screaming backends help scoring; how they allow you to open up a shot.  Well folks, these screaming backends absolutely kill me.  Give me lanes that haven't been stripped in a week, lanes with 52 feet of oil, lanes with a super long buff, just something to kill the back ends.  I'm not big handed, I don't cover a lot of boards, but I really struggle on booming back ends.  I've spent the last year trying to find a way to combat this.  Had some luck using very aggressive stuff that burns early and rolls out (SCB) as long as I can get it to roll out at the right place.  When I use my normal stuff and move really deep, yes, I can hit the hole, but can't carry squat.  I need to generate some angle to carry, but the backends I'm seeing either give me too much angle or just plain want to hook to much to control the break point correctly.  I probably need to learn how to generate more side roll or something, yes?

Luckily, the last time I talked with the lane man he was considering going to a once a week strip instead of daily.

Bones, I've dropped to 15.  Tried some 14's last year and most just didn't carry well.  My 14 pound Rush was the only exception, though I haven't tried a 14 pound Buzzsaw.  I have plenty of speed (I think).  If fact, sometimes it seems that if I toss it faster it just hooks more.

Bob, I had a ball (Buzzsaw Blueberry) drilled 1 x 1 that was pretty good on this sort of shot.  But I dumped it when I went down to 15's.  I need something else with that layout.

Rags, I was going to suggest something of this nature.  I have a higher particle loaded ball (Arsenal Aggressive) that I drilled 1.5x1 and it offers a very smooth transition from oil to dry.  I encounter the same problems as you on screaming backends, too much or too little angle (O/U).  It's still O/U by definition, just now from front to back vs side to side.

The smoother rolling balls should hopefully offset the strong reaction and offer you a more normal look.  With the thickness of our oils today, I recommend particle over resin as resin covers can still get a little jumpy due to the energy stored.  Hope this helps...

Some may simply be your style.

I know that I need to be able to pull the ball and have it hold.

I have run into conditions where the best scoring comes when your mistakes are when you swing the ball too wide. The bowlers who hit this all tend to be bigger boomers that their mistakes tend to be to push the ball wide.

I can do this but my carry is not good. Whether it is axis tilt, revs, etc I don’t know.

I've had a similar problem with my Ultimate. It'd skid real far and then snap back almost uncontrollably. My Trooper really evened out the lanes and allowed for a much straighter trajectory.
