does it impress you?
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:31:19 AM »
Does it impress you when people brag about the scores they shot with this ball or that ball? Does it really make the ball, or the bowler, sound better in your opinion?

Do you buy equipment because all the heavy hitters in your area have one, are because you see a pro on t.v. use it with sucess?

I am NOT influenced by anyone I see using any type of equipment, or putting big scores up with one such ball or another ball. IMO it doesn't matter what is popular, it is what works for you. Also I think it is utterly stupid to say ' I was {insert ball name} and shot 750' that tells me nothing other than you shot okay on one night. Tell me about what a ball does on the lane give me specifics.

I do not buy gear because it the next big thing or because a pro is using it, buy stuff that works for me not for anyone else.

i'm more likely to be impressed if the bowler can throw the ball straight with little axis rotation and move way in and really hook the same ball with a different hand release----and be able to score equally well.

I don't know how to actually take your question??? I have never, ever, heard anyone say to get this-or-that ball just because he or she had a great night with it.

However, I do to some degree will give someone who I respect here at BR or even at my house a lot of credence to what they say over some Bowling Mag that is getting paid to boast false great things about a ball.

Another point I would like to make is that we all get excited for our bowling brothers and sisters when they do bowl great, I for one do watch the Pros and the good locals to see what they are successful with.

I mean who doesn't come in here and say "WOW!! I shot my first 700 series or my first 300 game" I know I have said fun stuff like that...why, because the people who don't bowl just don't get it and I find that only the people who do bowl do...thats why

The thing that sells me about a ball usually, is what I see from the ball when I see it in person, in terms of how it rolls through the pins, and how much control of the breakpoint it has.  Another things is obviously the area the bowler appears to have, missing outside, or inside.  And of course, combining who's throwing the ball, with the reaction it's giving.  If I'm not watching someone throw it, I'm probably looking for a lower RG, lower differential, unless I'm planning something out of the ordinary for me with the ball.

I want a certain motion on the lane. Yes, I'm sure I could score with the latest, greatest thing everyone else is using but I have a tendency to bowl with stuff no one else is throwing.

Hmm, with new equipment, I take a look at the ball recation and the bowler playing it at home lanes. There are players that make ANY ball look great, and others who have gruesome releases - but the overall picture gives a good impression of what a ball can do. There are so many factors involved, that you need different information sources to judge equipment. Reviews are a good source, as well as user videos - but you need to do a lot of legwork for a sensible judgement, and then there is still the question if the ball fits YOUR style and needs. What works for one player must not work another, or at least in the same way.

Anyway, I do not buy a ball because of TV appearances (Which I rarely get to see) or testimonials. Additionally, a high score or series does not tell you anything about a ball. If you are lucky to have a streak of luck, or a sudden matchup of style, lane condition and ball choice (happened to me recently), this high result is hardly to "blame" just on a ball.
