Well you have two options here really. First plugging a thumb and redrilling can hurt it, because I know the Lane#1 thing witht eh core, now if the thumb hole goes into the core, think about when you redrill your takig even more mass out of the core, but it relly shouldn't be a problem because it is such a small change. but what you could also do since it is a small movement apparently you can have it drilled with one of those slugs that's just a solid circle of urethane or whatveer and gets drilled out for your thumb, anyone know what I'm talking, I've only seen one used in the shop twice.

yea that would be called a thumb slug?

No YOUR talking about a thumb sleeve, or thumb insert, the solid one is a slug.

How much is a "tab"?  If it's less than 1/8", I'd throw it for a while before deciding to plug it, for several reasons.  First, you're not likely to hurt your hand with a shorter grip.  Second, shorter grips can result in extra revs.  Third, while plugging and redrilling that close to the same spot doesn't hurt the ball reaction, it does reduce the ball's value if you decide to sell it.  If you do decide to change the span, do it with a slug if you can do so without drilling through the side of the slug.  Talk to your driller about drilling the hole out for a 1 1'4" or 1 3/8" slug - no reduction in ball's resale value--  JohnP

What's the "thing with the Lane #1 core"?

Anyway, a properly done plug and redrill will have almost zero effect on the ball.  Almost half of my stuff has been plugged.  Some of it even has plug work in the track.  If the span would have been done correctly, you'd already have drilled into the part of the core you're concerned with.

The most important thing is to get the span right.  A poorly fitted ball will teach you bad habits.  Many proshops drill your span too long.  The shorter grip might feel odd, but might be better for you.  Is there an IBPSIA shop nearby that can evaluate your grip?  Modern theory is that the lines of your finger joints should be at least half way past the mid part of the hole when you put your thumb in the ball and rest your fingers across the fingerholes.
