Does this tournament format seem impossible to you?
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:08:55 PM »
For the last few months, we have been bowling in a doubles 7-8-9 no tap tournament. It is a small tournament, and we draw partners instead of choosing them. It is also handicapped 80% of 220. One game is 7 pin no tap, one is 8 pin, and one is 9 pin. To win the pot, we have to win two months in a row. Does this seem to be impossible for a couple decent bowlers to win two months in a row due to low average people getting handicap and not having to shoot spares they would otherwise have to shoot at which causes their average to be low because of a low conversion rate?

But it's a small tournament eventually a 220 will shoot higher than 789..

Given if you have to draw partners when you bowl in the tournament, Two "decent" bowler's are not going to be paired together every time they try the tournament.

Unless of course a bunch of high average bowlers jumped in this tournament, looking for a easy win and thus don't get paired with one of the low average bowlers often enough.

The tournament looks like it was setup so a pair of high rollers couldn't come in a dominate it.

The last few times I've done no tap, I haven't tried as hard and have done better . I just take one of my smoother balls and stay in the pocket. Haven't shot under 830 since

Handicap in this format kills the 180+ bowlers. With a 192 average, I shot 836 scratch and 905 handicap because it isnt capped at 900. I was the second highest scratch bowler, but was blown out of the water handicap by a 940 something. My partner and I won scratch easily, but when the handicap was factored in, we won by only 3 pins. I would say that with a 900 cap, two high rollers could very well dominate it

Last night, I shot 300 on 8 pin, 260 on 9 pin (I sent one shot way wide and left a 2 4 10 split that I converted and forgot to throw the ball for a Greek church second ball of the 10th,) and 276 for 7 pin no tap where I once again sent a ball way wide. 7 8 9 no tap is super easy barring operator error

No-taps are fun, and I like to bowl in them.  The success of high average bowlers largely depends on the handicapping system.

One house I go to caps scores at 300 in all handicap tournaments.  This house also handicaps at 90% of the difference of the highest average bowler in the tournament.  High average bowlers tend to dominate no-taps at this house, especially when a 235-250 average bowler comes in, and the 220-230 average bowlers end up with handicap of some sort.

Another local house uses 90% of 220 and does not cap scores at 300.  Higher average bowlers do not win as frequently here.  However, in one no-tap I bowled here a few PBA regional guys showed up and won the tournament.  A couple of weeks ago, I bowled in a 4 game no-tap here and the winning score was 1277.  The 220+ bowlers were not pleased.

At the end of the day, I bowl in no-taps more for fun and not necessarily to win anything.  They are a great way to get some tournament experience, especially at other houses, and have a fun time.
