That much diversity
« on: March 17, 2005, 04:02:47 AM »
Tuesday night,
I watch a few 210-220 avg. bowlers STRUGGLE mightly on a tougher condition. Most of these guys had the most horrible approach you have ever seen. I cannot explain it, this is just one of those you have to believe me when I tell you cases. It's not like these guys were shooting 170's, these guys were consistently shooting 130-140's. I bowled on the condition and it was tough but it was not 130-140 tough. In the past, you have heard me use the term "help those who cannot help themselves" and this was an apparent case of that. None of these guys could consistently get their ball to the pocket.
I know their is a big difference in a THS and a sport condition, but the shot gave a bowler the ability to play any part of the lane they wished so long as they stayed accurate. I think that accuracy is something that is preached but not practiced. I learned the old fashioned way, with tape on your mark and breakpoint, how to be accurate. I think that some bowlers skip over this step and then complain when the condition requires it. Any examples or comments out there on this?

I am by no means "super bowler", but I can shoot well with the best of them. Bowlers that carry a better average than me on THS do not do as well when we hit a tournament/sport shot. There is definately a lack of accuracy today with a bowler.

Bowlers are going to complain, that has been the case for a very long time. I never really noticed it until I started running a bowling center. They complain about everything. EXAMPLE: Monday, a guy in the league that averages about 210 opens the first frame of game 1 turns around and says "This @#$#@ house, I hate this @#$@#$@# house". Turns out he shoots 740s for the night. I kind of think he made an idiot out of himself, but hey, thats my thoughts*L*

Yeah that is what I know, Bones. Maybe I'm putting my foot in my mouth here, but, I think there should be a standard for a bowler who avgs. 220. I know I can avg. 210 if I was in a league this year, I'm not because I'm in college. I was just astonished at the fact that 220 avg. bowlers were consistently shooting 130 on a condition that really was not that hard. BUT 220 just doesn't carry the weight it used to in alleys nowadays. It's is ridiculous that some centers are in a help those who can't help themselves mode of thinking, because I remember in my youth league, our manager would lay down reverse blocks and floods to test youth. Basically it was like a reality check.

years ago I used to spend hours practicing with one of the PBAs best,..today he has over 20 wins, and headed for the HoF. We would place 2 styrofoam coffee cups (empty) on the lane at the arrows, and give the ball one board on each side. He could throw the ball through those cups and maybe hit one every 50 or so shots, that's accurate,...I spent half of my practice walking down the gutter getting my cups,..after months I did get better,....after all that walking you learn to hit what you're looking at.

WOW!! That's amazing jim. See why can some people have that kind of commitment. They want to have the results without the hard work and dedication it takes to achieve those results.

I feel happier about the fact that I've been shooting low 600's (including my 642 high this past week) on my Tuesday league tough shot than the higher games that I've shot on my Monday night THS. On Tuesday nights I've had to hit the precise board at the precise speed and accuracy every time to achieve good scores- otherwise if I miss a board left, I don't hit the headpin and if I miss a board right- you can expect to go through the face or leave an ugly split.

I guess I grew up bowling in the plastic yellow dot era of the late 70's/early 80's, where you had to hit the same mark all the time to shoot 200's. So I didn't learn to hook the ball across the lane, play for area and use the latest technology. I didn't own a urethane ball until I had been bowling in leagues for 12 years- and that only happened because my bowling coach suggested that I purchase a Blue Hammer to increase my carry percentage. I've always been more of an accurate bowler- so I welcome a sport shot condition, or tougher conditions.
