does your pro shop guy get it?
« on: January 25, 2005, 04:54:03 AM »
I mean really, really get it??
Does he understand coverstocks?
Does he understand layouts and how they affect ball reaction?
Does he understand how you throw the ball?
Does he understand cores and how they affect ball reactions?
Does he understand the concept of an arsenal, and what YOU ACTUALLY NEED?

Or does he just want to sell you the latest hook in a box?

(added on edit)
And - most important - is he willing to share his knowledge - teach you what he knows, so you can make decisions for yourself, or does he just say "leave it to me".

My guy gets it all and he imparts it all.  He trys to help everyone whether he drills 10 balls a year for them or has never laid eyes on them.  He won't drill anything for anyone new without watching them bowl first.  He is one of the best for fixing spans/pitches, orig. fitting and layouts and reaction.  Top notch I believe him to be the best in NC and plenty would agree.  There are not many as good as him anywhere.  Him and maybe one or two other guys are the best in NC.

None of the shops here "get it". Sadly, its the latter with a stacked layout is the best that can be done here.

No;  my ball driller knows nothing, and keeps it all to himself.

My driller gets it, is will to share it, and will learn it if it is something
new (or that he hasn't heard of)

He allows me back in the shop are to just talk, and when I am experimenting
he is there to help, or soak in the info.  It's a shame that I am moving,
but I think I will continue to drive back and get my stuff done there.

My pro shop guys "gets it" but likes to keep it to himself. MOST places I have gone, dont realize that I DO actually know some stuff about balls, drillings, coverstocks, etc. I guess because I'm 16, they just think "oh wow, another kid who wants a big hooking ball, and doesnt know a thing about the game".

Jeff Massey at Harley's in Simi Valley "gets it" and employs "it". He's Columbia staff and a good friend of Maximum Bob, Robert Smith. ... my 2 cents ..

I know the guy knows what hes doing but he needs to ask more questions to help himself and the customer, needs to explained more stuff even if hes not asked a question and people will be more happy with what they get, hes not liked by to many in the bowling community, but i went to him when i first started and hes been nice to me and he knows how i bowl.

Both my pro shop guy and his second hand man (howdy Goof1073/Chris) understand everything there is about bowling equipment, layouts, how people throw their equipment, cores and what I am looking for in my arsenal. They even take the time to explain what should work and what may just be a condition specific ball based on my style. They don't sell me the latest hook in the box- they work with me based on the different conditions I see in tournaments and leagues to get the best matchups for my money.

They are willing to share any knowledge that I wish to glean from them- and try to explain things in terms that I can handle...

Our pro-shop guy knows everything you can learn in a 3 hour sesson with a salesman from the distributor. Put the CG in the grip center and send the ball out.

My proshop gets it, with the exception of knowing how a bowler throws the ball.  I took care of that by working with the guys on the lanes, but, since they have a standalone shop, it's not the case for everyone.  They try to get the info from the bowler, but the average shopper just wants something that hooks.  I've also been there enough that they know me and are willing to talk with me about what I'm looking for.  They aren't afraid to tell me "NO!" when I want something I just don't need -- I think my wife may have talked to them about that!!  As a matter of fact, one of them flat out told me "You have too damn many balls -- just pick one and throw it!!"
