does your pro shop guy get it?
« on: January 25, 2005, 04:54:03 AM »
I mean really, really get it??
Does he understand coverstocks?
Does he understand layouts and how they affect ball reaction?
Does he understand how you throw the ball?
Does he understand cores and how they affect ball reactions?
Does he understand the concept of an arsenal, and what YOU ACTUALLY NEED?

Or does he just want to sell you the latest hook in a box?

(added on edit)
And - most important - is he willing to share his knowledge - teach you what he knows, so you can make decisions for yourself, or does he just say "leave it to me".

With regard to the sharing of his knowledge, he is more than willing to share all of his knowledge with his customers, when asked, but he will also determine the limit of the customer's understanding and not overwhelm him/her with too much information.

I think my ball driller is good one of the best but, he doesn't share it. He won't tell me my measurements because he says its a secret. I will tell him of a suggestion that I got for a drill of this sight and he says they don't know what they are talking about. He thinks he knows everything but I know nothing.
He says the guys who give you drilling advise for track, ebonite, brunswick bowlingballs etc..are just trying to get you buy a ball. They really don't know the best way to drill it (go fiqure). I go to him because he can plug and drill a ball and get it back to you the next day and because if you don't have all the money for a ball he'll let you take it and pay him later. Thats cool but the mark up is usually fifty bucks more. I asked him about an old power groove proactive black that he had on the shelf ( correct me if i'm mistaken), he said the ball was new. I said that ball came out in like 2003. He said it just came out this year. Did they make another one or re-release it? He just wants to charge me more than what its worth. I think that i'll go back to the local bowling alley pro shop. They aren't the best but they have a tear system. The more you buy the lower your price gets. If you're a good customer they will wet sand a ball for you for free, not charge you tax on an item etc..If only they would tell you if they think a particular drill won't work for you. I had to find out the hard way. Once I get my measurements I can put to full use some of the suggestions that I get from some of the guys on this sight. I experienced enough and read enough over the last 15 years that i've been bowling to get the benefit of the dought from any proshop guy.

Yeah, my pro shop guy (Vinny, aka usedbowlingballscom) gets it just fine, but there's only so much you can do with an old, weak, no-revs, no-talent hack like me.

BigHorhn -- Consider this from your driller's perspective.  He's spent the time with you to develop the best fit he can give you.  If he gives you a copy of the drill sheet, you can take that to an internet shop that buys in large quantity at reduced price and they can drill the ball without spending one second fitting you.  Not fair.  --  JohnP

Added on edit:  But if you want to deal with another local shop, you can take them the ball and they can very easily copy the fit.  So the only real reason you would want the drill sheet is to deal with an internet shop.

My pro shop guy Travis is great, he is all of the above. I usually buy balls on my own, take them to him, we chat about a layout and what i would like the ball for and he comes up with a drilling that should suit my needs.

Examples... HRPS drilled for controll, recharge drilled for length, impulse zone drilled to hook (after he drilled the impulse he told me that that is gonna be the biggest hooking ball i will ever need)

Bowled against him as he was subbing on another team on leauge, i expressed my need for help a day or so eairler in the shop, and how i keep thumbing the ball.  While we were bowling, he was watching me bowl, and i seen him the other day and offered to help me out during the summer.  Cuz he made a mental note of how i bowl, and recognized a few problems.

So i would say hes a good guy, who i swilling to help some one with intrest and knowladge of the game.

my guy Greg is awesome, not only does he bowl awesome ( 200+ avg. PBA senior regional toruney winner) he is great with helping with my ball selection, he recommended the big bully and i haven't looked back, he showed me a special drilling called mass bias 101, it makes the ball hit twice as hard today i had three strikes not hitting either pocket. he tried to explain all that kinda stuff to me and well it went in one ear and out the other

My pro shop guys "gets it" but likes to keep it to himself. MOST places I have gone, dont realize that I DO actually know some stuff about balls, drillings, coverstocks, etc. I guess because I'm 16, they just think "oh wow, another kid who wants a big hooking ball, and doesnt know a thing about the game".

And - most important - is he willing to share his knowledge - teach you what he knows, so you can make decisions for yourself, or does he just say "leave it to me". Shares, everytime I am in there we talk for an hour or two I think we both learn something, since I stay more up to date on new balls that are out and read all the reviews.

Even though he really knows what he is doing I still do all of my own layouts he just punches the holes in them for me, I do send everyone I can to him though because he is very helpful and knowledgable not to mention I get a nice discount for sending him the business.

JohnP I understand your point. I am a very loyal person. I really don't plan on changing proshops. I did mention that when I ask for a suggestion for a new drill on a ball from this sight, most people want to know your measurements. Once I get the drilling suggestion I won't be drilling it myself my trusty ball driller will. So you see it can only benefit him from letting me know what they are. I have no ulterior motives. I recognize how he might feel about it. I did explain myself. He makes plenty of money off me. I'm not repsonsible for his paranoia, but the intangibles do keep me coming back. Do you still think i'm wrong?

John, while your point is valid, it may not be 100% accurate.  When I left for college, my pro shop guy printed out a spec sheet for me in case I got down there and I needed to drill a ball and didn't have time to get back to Chicago to have it done.  I didn't even ask for it, he just thought it was something that might help me.

Another reason to know your specs is if you are buying used balls, some people look for stuff where all they have to do is maybe change grips and a slug.

And to answer the topic at hand, I'd answer Yes to all of Mumzie's questions.  The only additions I'd make are that if you have your heart set on the the newest "hook in a box" he'll sell it to you, after he's tried to sell you the ball that would work better, and he'll share knowledge, but only if you want to know.  Some people don't care to know, they want to walk in and say "I want a ball to do X" and then let him do the rest.

BigHorhn -- I didn't say you were wrong, only that I was going to try to give the driller's perspective.  OK, you are very loyal and won't give your drill specs to an on-line pro shop.  But not everyone is that loyal, and when you give a drill sheet to one customer you open the door to other requests.  And the next guy might not be all that loyal.  --  JohnP

I carry a copy of my measurements with me at all times - just like I carry a list of balls and serial numbers.
I've had my equipment stolen before.
If a driller won't give me the measurements, I move on.
