Best choice for carrydown?
« on: September 21, 2003, 04:10:51 AM »
Hey everyone,

I have my arsenal pretty much where I want it, but I'm still looking for a ball taht can handle a bit more oil and works better on carrydown than my Cherry Bomb. I'm a stroker with slightly above average revs, 17 mph or so, high track. Here are some of the balls I'm considering. Feel free to suggest others and to suggest drillings as well. Any help is appreciated.

Possibilities:

V2 solid
Black Cherry Bomb
Vicious Attack
Blueberry or Cranberry Saw
X-Factor Deuce

Thanks for the help!

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

When carrydown occurs, you want something that will hook slightly earlier, but that also depends on the drilling.

Gene add a V2 Strong to that list.

I threw that ball in 4 squads at an ebonite demo days. I wound up buying one and having it drilled there according to the ebonite reps recommendation.

Carry down!, what carry down?.

my league has a big wet dry shot and when the other guys are getting some over/under on the backend from carry down in game 2 and 3, I'm just getting warmed up, the ball rolls through anything. It is a strong cover with 1000 grit(abralon) OOB finish.

I would take it up in grit to maybe 1500-2000 abralon pads before polishing. to me Dull almost always beats Polished on carrydown.

My drilling is simple. The rep told me that the sweet spot for my pin placement, due to track, axis, tilt, revs etc, is right in my ring finger. The cg is kicked out 1/2" on grip line.

This season is going to bring me some cash. It's a tough house. scratch pots are winning with 230's. With this ball in my hands I'm sure I good for at least 1 240 plus game a night.

I never thought I would like Ebonite. after all I'm happy with my Diesels but the V2 rolls a little different and is more angular that a diesel particle. also a little more playable on a fresh house shot.

I think Visionary's Granite Gargoyle is a great ball when the lanes get tough.  When the back ends get inconsistent or squirty I switch to the granite gargoyle.  As long as there is some head oil it will make a very smooth move to the pocket and hit very hard.  Whenever I can't find a consistent shot with my "backend balls"  I switch to the granite gargoyle.

Here's the problem with carrydown, many times the heads begin to burn up so the stronger pieces that people have been suggesting just roll out.

If you really do have sufficent head oil, any strong, lower RG ball will be fine. From there decide particle or reactive depending on the about of hand you have.

BUT, if you are running out of head oil, you will really need something to get through the heads & still have enough bite to roll in the back. I've found particle pearls excel at this if you've got decent hand. Otherwise, my favorite (a person with fewer revs) so far has been a reactive polished & then hit very lightly scuffed. I just can't get the pearls to turn in the back.
