Dots or Arrows?
« on: November 19, 2004, 05:31:56 AM »
I personally use the dots and wondering if I should switch to using the arrows for aiming. Does anyone know of any benefits of  using the arrows besides getting the ball to skid a little longer?

I use, at varying times, the dots just past the foul line, the arrows, the dark marks way down the lane and various boards between the arrows and the dark marks; not to mention once in a great while the shadow of the pin.  Depends on oil volume, pattern, carry down (or not).  If you can learn to use all of these it will help your game.  Generally the drier it gets out there, the further down I target - rarely do I target at the arrows, usually I'm looking further down.

In general the closer you spot the earlier you set the ball down and it starts to roll. The further down the lane you spot the further you will put the ball on the lane and the later it will start to roll.

Spotting at the arrows versus the dots will have you get the ball out on the lane further and delay the ball reaction.

I also believe you become more accurate targeting further down the lane. Targeting at 5 or 6 feet means any error is magnified 10x by the time you reach the pins. Targeting at the arrows is 15 feet and only 4x.

Also be able to target particular boards not just ones with marks (arrows or dots) on them.

A majority of the people on this board use boards, and not arrows, and they target the board further down the lane, which is more benefical, but takes a lot longer to learn.

The general rule is the further down you look, the more it will skid, closer to the foul line, the earlier.

Me personally use to use boards, and use to target rather far down the lane. But I noticed that I prefer to use arrows due to a lot of practicing and expierementation(sp?). Everyone is different. Ive seen pro bowlers use the dots(Wes Mallot, and Michelle Feldman) and ive seen more player target a specific board further down the lane(wich is a majority of the tour).
