Neither. Looking at the dots will help you get the ball down faster and into an earlier roll good for oily lanes. Arrows let you push the ball out a little more and are better for med-drier lanes. Use both if you can or just use the one you are most comfortable/accurate with.

And then there is me...setting myself with my feet and playing the box at the breakpoint- generally have no sense of the dots or arrows when bowling on a THS (comes in handy at the Petersen as well but for different reasons ).

On heavier conditions, I will bring the target back, but I have found that if I try and target short of the arrows, I tend to short arm the shot.

I used to look down at the foul line too!!.. Now I use the dots, average went up about 10 pins.. The trick to changing up is to have the confidence that you are not going to foul and that you will have the right rotation on the ball.. It took about 10 games to get used to.

I look at the boards at the foul line. It has worked for me. 210 avg.

I'd not recommend foul line dots, because you have to lower your chin when you try to watch them. This will offset your balance and alter your body posture at the release. Looking at the arrows or even a bit farther down the lane keeps your head up, focussed and your body in a more upright and stable position.

If you fare well with the dots I wouldn't change it, but when you are unsure, go for the arrows. It will also make it easier to spot what the ball is doing on the lane after the release, since you will have to look up again which is another fast movement which could tip your balance.

Dots, arrows, 30', 40', pin reflections, tunnels....learn to use them all.  It seems the chin position (down at dots; up at reflections) can affect my throw, so I practice each to be prepared for whatever tournament condition.

Remember, the further down the lane you look, the bigger the 'mark' can be.
