Down and In..ball choice?
« on: January 04, 2010, 08:17:31 AM »
Hey everyone, I've recently started bowling again after about an 8 month period of no bowling at all and I would like to purchase a new ball. My signature shows what I currently have (a whole 2 balls). I'm looking for something that would take well to playing down and in on your THS which is usually on the medium side in my area. My ball speed is around 16 mph and my revs I would have to guess on but would put around 275ish. After looking around on online, reading reviews, and watching videos; I think I may have it narrowed down. At the moment I'm thinking either the Roto-Grip Nomad or the Storm Furious. I'd prefer to go with a Storm or Roto-Grip but always open to suggestions for other companies as long as it's not an Ebonite cause I just don't pair well with their balls. Mostly what I'm looking for from you guys is your opinion on ball choice and drilling choice(5x3 maybe?)for that ball that would best fit playing down and in for my style. Please feel free to ask me any variables that would help with your opinion and I'll do the best I can to answer for you. Thank you

I would say a Nomad Solid might be a good start. Comes polished OOB, but it's still a solid. I wouldn't really suggest a pearl since you've already got one and a hybrid that IIRC came out of the box dull, so I'd suggest something a little in between.

The Furious may work well, but if you're playing close to the friction you may not be able to use something that dull after a game. In fairness, I bowled with a stroker who used a Black Widow Bite and played right of the track, but his RPM's were lower than yours and his ball speed was much higher.

Notice the green and red lines under your text?  It means you suck at English.

Awesome you made some excellent points that I hadn't really put enough emphases on when I was looking at balls such as their OOB finish it just slipped my mind. Thank you

Any other thoughts everyone? Or any balls that come to mind that would work? I appreciate the responses.

+1 for the Nomad Solid.  I have one and am really liking it.  It has a pretty angular move for me and is pretty versatile.  Sneaky strong.  I typically play anywhere from straight up 7 to swinging it from 3rd arrow out to about 5.  Great hitter with good continuation.  Mine is drilled pin right of ring finger, about 2 5/8 stacked, with a hole below my PAP pitched away.  I actually ended up hitting the cover very lightly with a used green scotchbrite to smooth it out a bit.  Oh, and in case you didn't know, this ball does not have any filler, which probably helps with the hit and keeping the pins low.

For drilling I was thinking of going with Roto-Grips 5B...here's the PDF http://rotogrip.com/products/pdf/reactiondrillchart.pdf

millt,

I'd get your PAP and stats from your driller and go with his/her advice.  He knows your game, style and lane conditions you will be bowling on much better.  From us it's just the SWAG method.

Good luck with your choice and keep us posted.

The Nomad is an excellent choice.  I found mine worked better for me when I knocked the polish off of it.

Why not the Storm Natural?  Urethane is great for the down-and-in shot, and the Natural will give you a different look than both your Lane #1 balls.

I'm a stroker with higher speed than revs, and I can play up the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd arrow with my Natural on anything from dry to medium THS.  Mine is drilled with the #3 layout (for maximum flare).

Just a thought.

Have you considered the HyRoad?  I find that it is an excellent down & in ball and it is very versatile.  I use it as my benchmark ball.  The hybrid coverstock and the core are a great combo and the surface is easy to tweak.

You might also consider the Mars as it is the most versatile ball in the Rotogrip Planet series.  I don't have the Nomad, but the other 2 Rotogrip Planet balls (Neptune & Pluto) I do have are great on a THS condition.  They all use the same core and the 3 balls cover everything from light oil to heavy oil.  You can't beat the performance and pricing of the Planet series balls for the $$.

I like what I see in the Fast & Furious as well as the Street Rod and the Street Rod Pearl too.  My Natural is also great on lanes that have dried out.  All the balls in this line use the same core and they give excellent performance & value.

Hmm I hadn't really given the Hy-Road a lot of thought but now that you mention it and I look at the specs on it it sounds pretty promising to be in a toss up between it or the Nomad. I looked at the natural and I'm just not really sold on buying a urethane ball though on certain conditions I can imagine it shinning beautifully. The mars just scares me a little because of how low the specs are on it compared to the versatility I'd have with drilling up say a nomad or Hy-road but I may be completely wrong I'm just looking purely at the RG and Differential. As Stormbowler83 brought up earlier the oob finish of the furious is a duller one I can see where it could cause more midlane grab issues than one of the 1500 grit polished balls. So I'm really looking at the toss-up of the Nomad and Hy-Road. Does this sound like a decently accurate break down of the balls? Please correct anything I was off on. Thanks

millt, seeing that you have 2 lane #1 balls already why not stick with lane #1. they are making some really great pieces. have a look at the massacre blue death and the THS reto buzzsaw. just a thought. i will say both the nomad solid and the hy-road are really good piecesas well. good luck with your choice.

I understand your hesitancy about urethane.  I love my HyRoad but people have told me the Blue Death will last longer as the lanes break down.  Both balls are very similar in their specs (RG, diff, and hybrid cover) and take well to surface adjustments.  The HyRoad's specs are actually very close to your Hybrid Dirty Bomb too... something to think about.

The Lane #1 THS is an amazing ball and would be a good choice if you can find one. Very smooth ball, not too much movement on the back end, and great for down-and-in. The ball is discontinued and a lot of the ones left floating around out there have short pins (1-2").

The Lane #1 THS does look like it would be a great find to come across if I could find one with a little longer pin. Any idea what would be a good price on one of those. I've never really looked into buying balls that were discontinued so I've always just paid the pro shop price.

And for just like "recap" purposes of whats sounding promising to me at the moment... Nomad solid (many find knocking off the polish has helped), Hy-Road(has similar spec's to my HDB), Blue death massacre (is  said to handle lane breakdown a little better than that of the Hy-road), THS Buzzsaw (if possible to locate one with decent pin distance).

And again I appreciate your insight everyone.
