Drawing the line
« on: May 05, 2005, 01:39:11 AM »
I am bowling in a center that has some issues.  They know it and are trying to fix them.  There is nothing they can do about it for the near future.  The problems are lane related and it is very frustrating.  I am looking for ways to change my practice routine to take the center out of play.  I have bought a screen from Susie Minshew and will start doing some video work along with blind practice.  I'm trying to not develope bad habits by over compensating for the lane conditions.  The only way I can think of is limiting the amount of time I actually bowl for score and that would be in league.  Any suggestions????

One of my favorite things to do on conditions like that, (we have a ton of them out here)  is to start shooting at spares.  if you use a spare ball then it shouldn't matter what the condition is.  play some low ball or do something like that. I too enjoy shadow bowling.  I bowl on a league over at Boise State University.  And a deal that the manager there gives his league bowlers is free bowling sunday thru thursday any time, for free, as long as we don't turn on the scorers.  So i'll go down there 2-3 times a week and just have them turn on the lanes in back without the scores and bowl somewhere between 5-10 games.  only problem is its about a half hour drive out there and with todays gas prices that gets a little spendy, but not as spendy as if i were to have to actually pay for the bowling..  But honestly there are several things you can do on shots like that.  you just can't worry about your score.  simple as that.

When I'm practicing for mechanics, I only worry about the lanes up through the arrows/splice. Occasionally, I'll pay attention up to a breakpoint.

I usually deliberately choose a ball that is completely wrong for the condition - whatever that may be - so that I'm not tempted to concern myself with pinfall.
